You knew after ROM & Shogun Warriors posts that I had to get to the third in Marvel's 1970s Licensed Toys Triumvirate eventually, right?

Yesterday over on the blog, I listed the authors who had birthdays in January who I read at least 1 short story by on or near their birthday.

I'm sure I missed some, especially in genres I don't normally read. So social media hive-minds: tell me who I missed!

Sunday Shorts: January Birthdays — ANTHONY R. CARDNO
I decided to try something new for 2026: when I’m aware of an author’s birthday, I want to celebrate it by reading a short story or two by that author, preferably (although not always practicably) on ...

Today's Random Comic Book Back Issue Reread is appropriate for my return home to very cold New Jersey, as it takes place during an impending ice age: Arion Lord of Atlantis 1 (1982). Writer: Paul Kupperberg Art and Cover: Jan Duursema.

Today's Random Comic Book Back Issue Reread: The Grim Ghost 2 (1975). Writer: Michael Fleischer Art and Cover: Ernie Colon. Atlas's entry into the "dead criminal gets sent back to Earth by Satan to gather souls" genre. Colon's art is solid and expressive throughout, especially in the close-ups.

Today's Random Comic Book Back Issue Reread: Sea Devils 31 (Sept-Oct 1966, which means this issue and I are the same age!) According to online sources: Writer: Ed Herron. Art: Howard Purcell and Sheldon Moldoff. An absolutely whacky story that is pure Silver Age.

Today's Random Comic Book Back Issue Reread: X-Men 44 (1968). Writer: Gary Freidrich Layouts: Don Heck Pencils: Werner Roth Inks: John Tartaglione.

This might have been one of the first X-Men back issues I bought, likely shortly after the Liberty Legion debut in The Invaders/Marvel Premiere in '76.

Today's Random Comic Book Back Issue Reread: Silver Age: Showcase 1 starring The 7 Soldiers of Victory, part of the Silver Age Event. Writer: Geoff Johns, Art and Cover: Dick Giordano.

Today's Random Comic Book Back Issue Reread: Kurt Busiek's Astro City 1. Writer: Kurt Busiek Art: Brent Anderson Cover: Alex Ross. Another favorite series w/ an intermittent multi-publisher history. Don't know why it felt right to reread the issue that started it 30-odd years ago, but here we are.

Here's a photo of an old comic book I read or reread today and a few skeets worth of rambling about it.

Also "I wrote a book/theater/TV review or other post on my blog."
Generalize your skeets. What's your most typical, most average skeet?

Christ, these assholes (who might be human or canine) are keeping me from writing books/comics, which are for sale. Please buy them, we are so very broke and tired. Also, butter.
Generalize your skeets. What's your most typical, most average skeet?

Just spent five hundred dollars because Shawn did crime/tried to poison himself/had a bizarre health emergency, please dear god buy my books. Follow-up clarification: Shawn is a cat, not my human child or accident-prone roommate.

Today's Random Comic Book Back Issue Reread is Marvel Classic Comics 9: Dracula (1976) which was actually a reprint of Pendulum Illustrated Classics 5 from 1973. Writer: Naunerle Farr, Art: Nestor Redondo, Cover: Gil Kane. This is my very beaten up original copy. I actually have at least 3.

Was supposed to leave for my first work trip of 2026 tomorrow (Sunday). But we're supposed to be getting massive snow in NJ tomorrow, so my company is flying me out a day early. Which is why I'm posting from Newark airport at 5am on a Saturday.

Today's Random Comic Book Back Issue Read is Showcase 83 , the 3rd Nightmaster issue. Writer: Denny O'Neil, Art: Bernie Wrightson. This was an impulse buy sometime last year which has sat unread til today. I really enjoyed it. I'm going to have to track down issues 82 and 84 to have the whole story.

Today's Random Comic Book Back Issue Reread: New Warriors 1. Writer: Fabian Nicieza Art: Mark Bagley & Al Williamson. Another sentimental favorite series still in my collection. I was happy to see Rich Rider get his powers back, and to see Namorita, Firestar & Marvel Boy get a regular book.

Today's Random Comic Book Back Issue Reread: Atlas Comics' Tales of Evil 1, 1975. Writing: Russ Jones (2 stories), Jack Younger. Art: Jerry Grandenetti (2 stories), Mike Sekowsky. Not my original copy but a recent replacement.

In honor of artist Joe Staton's 78th birthday today, Random Comic Book Back Issue Reread is DC Special 29. Writer: Paul Levitz. Art: Joe Staton & Bob Layton, an amazing team. They were doing great work on All-Star Comics but I think this is their best work. Cover Art: the equally great Neal Adams.

Today's Random Comic Book Back Issue Read is Nutsy Squirrel 71 from 1956.

A pretty standard "funny animal" issue, where the main character of each story is good-natured & innocent, thus ripe to be taken advantage of by "smarter" friends, whose plans always backfire on them. Cute artwork throughout.
