Seen years ago in a corner of a DC museum an exhibit of columns of soil samples, like 8" sq and 8' tall, one from each state. Sounds dull; the exhibit designers clearly thought so, but I found it really arresting. The subtle beauty and wonder still resonate, so a shout-out to whoever dreamed it up.
