Found this Jelly Ear fungus yesterday, not on a tree but a shelter overlooking the sea at Sheringham. One of the two Great Black-backed Gulls seen skimming over the sea whilst this Black-headed Gull preferred standing on the sea wall. A few more Crocus have emerged.

25 May 2025 – on a narrow black sand path back from Karekare Beach (where some of the movie "The Piano" was filmed) and thru an odd slice of forest. The forest floor is thick with grass and still retains it lush green colour. Tree trunks and limbs are a muted grey, bent and twisted, all over the show. That’s one way to cope and survive with the wild West Coast winds right off the Tasman Sea! May in NZ is Autumn, with Winter quickly approaching in June. The day was overcast thus adding to the forest's gloomy mood. A bit of pareidolia always lurks as shown here on a tree's limb, giving me a curmudgeonly scowl of greeting. "Aye - ye be leavin', eh? Well, don't loiter 'bout none, Miz Walky-Britches. Begone wit ya!" (Google translate was having a helluva go with this one LOL) The surrounding trees rattled their limbs in agreement, but that may have just been the wind...

The aesthetic key to this image is the finely and evenly rippled water. The ripples are mostly brown above (reflecting winter vegetation) and blue below (reflecting the sky). Flying just above the rippled water, the male hooded merganser has his wings in their downbeat. His head is black with a white patch, and with his hood folded back (think aerodynamic drag). The beak is black and the eye is yellow-orange. The outer parts of the wings are gray but the visible inner part of the near upperwing is patterned white, black, and gray. The breast and belly are white. Near the tail, above the midline, is a patch of brown. The tail is seen on edge so the details aren't apparent. Below the merganser, its reflection is blurred by the ripples in the pond's surface.
