Such stunning samples! #Orinasu-kan in Nishijin, #Kyoto still operate jacquard looms by hand and weave similar patterns. I was lucky enough to visit the workshop in November, they specialize in traditional theatre costumes & obi weaving. They had wonderful textiles & old looms on display! #Japan

Well this is great fun! Must go through my books to see if I can find an #18thCentury recipe for Gateau de Mille Feuille! #FoodHistory is a hobby of mine & somehow I’m always drawn to ye olde confections- category…

On that note: #MarieAntoinetteStyle at the V&A was STUNNING. Visuals galore, good texts, really moved me. The skill of the #18thCentury #Artesans who created the objects was tremendous. So many things I have wanted to see with my own eyes for years!

The horrors of the world are many, sharing my research at a time like this feels somehow very inconsequential and silly. Still, maybe some of the things I post can act as a brief respite from the awfulness. Maybe I will share glimpses of #dresshistory & #textiles just to cheer myself up.

Oooh, I haven't seen this before! Very good execution indeed, I really like how this demonstrates the extant pockets relationship to the garments around them. In #18thCentury fashion, everything was connected! If we keep viewing pieces individually, we lose their relationship to other garments.
This was such a clever design for a museum show. The pockets of the c18th were suspended from the waist so here, a recreation of the various layers, like an anatomical illustration. The yellow quilted pockets are original amongst the grey blue of the facsimile, #1740s #VandA #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

A little over a week ago I was overjoyed to see the fabulous #Cosprop exhibition at the Fashion and Textile Museum in London. It was like seeing old friends! Why hello Monsieur #Poirot! And hello #ElizabethBennet and #MrDarcy! What a delight ❤️ So many detailed & beautifully executed pieces.

Had a great time in Oxford last week attending the @bsecs.bsky.social annual #conference! Always so happy to share my research on gorgeous #18thCentury Finnish petticoats and meet lovely new people along the way. #DressHistory #BSECS

Honestly, the tailors who outfitted Astaire, Kelly etc. were absolute magicians. The appreciation for movement, immaculate fit, wonderful proportions and the right cut for each figure is just stunning! #tailoring #suits #dancing
if you want to understand tailoring, you only need to watch mid-century movies, when actors were dressed by tailors, not brands. in the 1944 film cover girl, gene kelly's suit drapes beautifully, moving with him, not against him. collar stays on his neck, even as he dances.

Feeling exhausted about work, life and the world in general. As an antidote I'm going through some of my research photographs & thought I'd share this #18thCentury beauty with you, enjoy the #embroidery and the worn out but wonderful #silk fabric ❤️👗🪡

Having a hellish time getting an article submission through a portal system for a specific publisher. The joys of #academia truly cannot be measured.

The whole thread is full of #wallpaper gorgeousness, but I love the bottom left and right combo of small florals and geometric shapes! Really wish I could paper a feature wall in my office with one <3 #Vintage #DreamHouse
Next book!
No more wacky textured effects, but well, these are gorgeous.

I always appreciate a good 16th century #map and lovely reading rooms! The Carta Marina by Olaus Magnus is rather a regional favourite here, being the earliest (somewhat) detailed map of #Finland with fab sea monsters included 😁 These wee beasties are just off the coast of Norway!

Lovely! ❤️👗 also a perfect example of a #museumissue: the mannequin is too tall! Torso is too long & the dress sits SO differently compared to the 50s photo so you get a totally different idea of how the dress should look. So common & can give the wrong impression about #Vintage and #HistoricalDress
Madame du Barry was born #OnThisDay in 1743. Christian Dior took inspiration from King Louis XV’s mistress for this A/W 1957 pale blue silk 'Du Barry' evening dress, which imitates the appearance of an 18th century open robe and petticoat. Met Museum. © 2019 Nicholas Alan Cope #fashionhistory

Well, this is really the type of thing that the internet is SUPPOSED to be for. #nomnomnom #Porcupine
Happy World Porcupine Day! For those wondering what a baby porcupine is called, it’s a porcupette. For those wondering what a group of porcupines is called, it’s a prickle. And for those wondering what porcupines sound like, turn up your volume for this smol guy called Kemosabe nomming on a banana…

Fascinatingly, von Troil's wife's uncle was Captain Carl Tersmeden who once owned the Alberga manor in Espoo, Finland. The original house is long gone, but it was in the area where I grew up! The #18thCentury garden has been partially restored and is now a little public park ☺️

Got to go to lovely Louhisaari Manor yesterday to help train museum guides. Gave a lecture & dressing up demonstration of Empire-era fashion (roughly 1790-1820). How wonderful it as to educate and inspire people about a topic I love so much! Wore my lovely hand-stitched white cotton dress ❤️

Allow me to introduce you to some more timeline cleansing gorgeousness! This beauty also dates from the #18thCentury and was very likely a #QuiltedPetticoat before it was turned into a bedspread. The details shows the fabulous embroidered border, which would've gone all the way around the hem.

This yellow #18thCentury ensemble from the @skmuseo.bsky.social features a delightful #QuiltedPetticoat and was reportedly worn by a newly married woman. It seems fitting to post on a sunny spring day:
