So he also walked to her side, his gaze fierce as he stared at the men inside. “Ha ha, so it’s just two little children.” The green-clad man saw the arrivals were merely two doll-like children and burst out laughing. The other three men also relaxed, their hands releasing their sabers. “Who are you?”

“I’m brewing poison.” Anyone with eyes could see that. “Oh.” He nodded but kept following her anyway. “Senior brother–” Ouyang Qingcheng stopped and stepped back a few paces, this time preventing Ye Yanxuan from bumping into her. Her tender face seemed covered with a layer of ice, her black gem-like eyes fixed on him. Ye Yanxuan retreated a step. Though Qingcheng said nothing, he felt an intimidating pressure emanating from her and involuntarily swallowed. He pouted, his watery eyes gazing at her: “Fine, I’ll go out. But you have to show me when you’re done, okay?”

Suddenly he closed in on the pink figure, his sword coming to rest at her small neck, a wicked smile forming: “Little doll, you lose.” Ouyang Qingcheng nodded, her tender face showing no sign of defeat — she simply resolved silently to train even harder. “Keep practicing. It’s only been four months — you’ve done very well.” Chu Yifan sheathed his sword, his purple eyes regarding his little disciple. Her aptitude was actually quite high; given time, she would become a force to be reckoned with. “Thank you for Master’s guidance.” Ouyang Qingcheng nodded.

She accepted them and tucked them into her robe. “Now, let Master test what you’ve learned about poisons during this time.”

chapter 12 :) these chapters are so short i have translated a huge chunk during the weekend, and it definitely gives sense of accomplishemnt to get them out at such a pace (tho for personal reading i prefer proper chapters)

She quickened her pace, and her pink-white figure descended like a graceful swallow outside the bamboo house. “Junior sister, you’re back. Where did you go?” Ye Yanxuan came clattering down from the bamboo pavilion and stood before Ouyang Qingcheng, his big eyes blinking as he studied her holding the snow fox. “Nowhere in particular.” Ouyang Qingcheng replied flatly, brushing past him with the snow fox as she headed up to the bamboo house, asking as she went: “Where is Master?”

Ouyang Qingcheng helf a red soft whip1, dancing with it among the falling cherry blossoms. The red whip whistled through the air, white robes fluttering, hair tangled with petals. Truly, the whip moved like a swimming dragon, and she like a colorful phoenix. Every move and stance possessed both beauty and commanding presence. “Chee-chirp–“ Suddenly Little Ball darted out from the flower bushes, standing before her and crying incessantly. Ouyang Qingcheng retracted her whip and extended her hands toward it. The small white form leaped into her embrace, its fox mouth gripping her collar and tugging in one direction. “Did something happen over there?”

After all, the area outside the Severed Valley was filled with traps and mechanisms. Without someone’s guidance, someone of her mediocre martial skills could never have made it here. Chu Yifan’s footsteps halted. Ouyang Qingcheng raised her head, her cold eyes watching as his lips curved into an extraordinarily brilliant smile — one that also made people feel extraordinarily cold and fearful. He turned around, the smile at his lips deepening. Yet the words he spoke were bone-chillingly cold: “So what if you made it in? Did you think you could threaten me? Keep dreaming. Now I’ll send you to join your father.” Without further hesitation, he shifted Ouyang Qingcheng to one arm, liften Ye Yanxuan with the other, and Little Ball leaped onto his shoulder. With a tap of his toe, he flew away. As he departed, a cloud of white powder scattered toward the young woman. “Ahh! Ahh! Ahh–“

The young man nodded. Five days ago, when Little Ball had returned to the Severed Valley, its front leg had indeed been bandaged by someone. So it was this little girl — perhaps this was fate. “You are my life-saving benefactors.” The little girl’s words were addressed to both Little Ball and the young man. Gratitude welled up in her otherwise calm eyes. “What should I call you, big brother?” Her large eyes gazed at the young man. The young man sat in a nearby chair and crossed his legs, his purple eyes studying the little girl, his thin lips curving upward: “My name is Chu Yifan1. You want revenge, don’t you? Become my disciple, and I’ll teach you martial arts and the art of poisons.” Taking another little disciple wouldn’t be bad — she could keep Xiao Xuan company.

The young man and the boy watched the little girl’s instantaneous transformation. From her small frame emanated a chill like polar ice, as if winter had arrived early. But there was no worry in those purple eyes — instead, his thin lips curved upward. Good. This version of her was far better than the lifeless shelf. Besides, he had always believed in “repaying grudge for grudge, vengeance for vengeance1.” He would help her fulfill her wish for revenge. “Very well. I’ll help you.” Resolute words, yet his curved lips held an irresistible wicked charm. At sixteen, his face still carried traces of youth, but that touch of darkness only made him more stunningly handsome. “Thank you.” The little girl’s bright eyes met his purple gaze, showing neither alarm nor fear. Her voice was flat, without any inflection. The moment her family was massacred, her former self had died. Reborn, she was no longer innocent — she knew only to repay every wrong. She would make those who destroyed the Ouyang household pay blood for blood, and she would find the mastermind behind it all and make them wish they had never been born… Her eyes narrowed, flashing with ruthlessness. Her tender face seemed to mature in an instant, shadows falling across her cheeks making it difficult to look directly at features so young yet so resolute.

The little girl on the bed didn’t even blink; her thoughts had drifted far away. “Little sister, can you not speak?” Why else would she ignore him? The young man outside the room shook his head and stepped inside. The spring breeze stirred, his robes fluttering. His face was like jade, his bearing elegant as a tree in the wind — a truly fine young gentleman. That face, that air, blending ethereal grace with wicked charm, was like something not quite of this world. “Master, you’re back. Little sister is awake.”

The message was clear: more information required more payment. “You certainly know how to do business.” A hundred taels for just that much — absolutely ruthless. “Another hundred taels for what happened at the Ouyang residence.” His sleeve dipped slightly, and two gleaming gold ingots slid from within his robes into his hand, then landed on the table with a crisp sound. “How refreshing.” The young woman in blue glanced at him and raised her brows.

Leaving the isolated valley, he flew swiftly across the snow toward the nearby town of Bagua1. Bagua Town lay in the southern region of Yan County. Though small, it had honest folk and bustling trade — quite prosperous indeed. The largest inn in Bagua Town shared the town’s name: the Gossip Inn. Besides providing food and lodging, the Gossip Inn had a special line of business — finding people and investigating matters. In plain terms, it was the equivalent of a modern detective agency. It was now the hour of the Dragon2, with pale sunlight filtering through — still early, and few people moved about the streets. The young man in white entered the Gossip Inn, bypassed the waiter, and walked straight to the proprietor. He placed an ingot of gold on the counter and parted his thin lips:

also i forgot to say that around christmas i had my first opportunity to play shadowdark and it really is the sort of game that shines only in play. bc it's nothing groundbreaking, but it's stellar as far as 'improving d&d quality of life' goes? just a lot of very good small choices there

the best feeling about pre-translating a bunch of chapters on your own time before publishing is the fact that you can drop a bunch at once sometimes after adding some small edits; the chapters on this one at the beginning are more scene-length too

The young man smiled at his puzzled expression and gestured toward the child: “Xiao1 Xuan, go heat some water. The doll needs a bath.” She was frozen through and needed hot water to warm up. “Yes.” Though still confused, Ye Yanxuan obeyed — his master’s word was law. His small form dashed off. The young man carried the little girl up to a room on the second floor. The room was sparse — just a table, chairs, and bed, along with a bamboo shelf lined with jars and paper-wrapped packages. The air carried a medicinal scent.

In the area it had uncovered lay a small child, her tiny face already turned blue from the cold — she was clearly near death. The young man raised an elegant brow, but his deep purple eyes, like unfathomable pools, showed no emotion whatsoever, let alone compassion. He was only sixteen, a poison doctor known for his wild temperament and refusal to be constrained by anyone. He killed on a whim and saved people only when he felt like it. He glanced at the half-buried little girl — she looked about four or five years old, her face blue, lips purple, eyes tightly shut. Pitiable, perhaps, but none of his concern. With a cold snort, he turned to leave. “Aowu–“ But as he turned, he felt something grip his trouser leg. Looking down, he saw his little pet. The snow fox not only clung to his leg, but also gazed up at him with jade-green eyes full of pleading, as if begging him to save the little girl. The young man raised an eyebrow, his thin lips curving into a wicked smile.

the biggest challenge for doing fan translations of long works is that it just... takes a lot of time to get through them, and the list of things i would like to translate is only growing, oops
