Zohran Mamdani likes staff to meet in-person, constantly pushing them for new ideas. He appears to need little sleep. And he’s talking to scores of officials who worked for previous mayors about how to manage City Hall.

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

this is the kind of smoke New York City politics needs (and will be sorely missed on the New York Times editorial board, especially now)

Why does this matter? Because the editorial is saying a candidate does something effectively that he, in fact, does not actually do as a comptroller.

This is why the editorial board should include and uplift writers who actually know how New York City government works.
I pointed out that the NYT editorial incorrectly says Brad Lander, as a comptroller, is a “manager” of the city budget

He may be a watchdog, but he’s not a manager of the budget. The OMB and mayor are. Here’s how the Times responded and here’s what the comptroller’s duties actually are.

This editorial also incorrectly says that the comptroller "has also proved to be an effective manager of the city’s sprawling budget office."

The comptroller doesn’t manage the city budget! Mayor Eric Adams and the city OMB does
