As is said in the article, it’s high school geography, not rocket science. Rivers flood, and you have to give them room.
Paywall now lifted: My special report this morning is about how we spent generations strangling our rivers to make room for our homes and farms, only to find we've ended up supercharging their flows.

What do we do when we realise we've built a society in a riverbed?

We strangled our rivers; now they're fighting back
Special report: We forced NZ's braided rivers into tiny channels so we could build our homes and farms in their riverbeds – now we're seeing the consequences. Marc Daalder investigates.

It appears that nothing has been learned from Cyclone Gabrielle as forestry ‘slash’ causes devastation again. How many more times will this have to happen before practices change?

'Flash flood' devastates small community in Motueka Valley
A path of destruction has been cut through a rural settlement in Motueka Valley, with one local blaming slash, saying "thousands of tonnes of logs and silt" came down.

This kukupa/kererū has become a regular visitor in our garden of late. Question is, will they hang around to be counted in the #nzgardenbirdsurvey or will they be like the kōtare and show up either side of the counting?

Around 8yrs of saved blister packs about to be sent off to Terracycle. I bought the box in a sale last year and have crammed it to bursting (lots of tape used!) The cost doesn’t seem so bad when it covers 8yrs!

What’s the betting that once they’re in opposition again they’d be hopping mad if the incoming government did the same. It sets a very dangerous precedent. Are we to see legislation flipping in and out of existence under urgency every time we have change of govt?

Luxon dismisses them as ‘worthies’, and Federated Farmers refuse to consider reducing methane emissions. Bet they’re the first to expect handouts when climate change
scuppers their incomes though 🙄 So arrogant and shortsighted 😞

Doing my bit for Predator Free NZ and have been setting a trap in the garden over the last few weeks as the overnight temperatures have been dropping.
Tally so far:
2 great big fat leopard slugs
2 that got away/ghosts
1 mouse
1 rat
I have to admit I was surprised the slugs triggered it!

What do the ants know that we don’t? I keep finding clusters of ants, mostly sitting still in odd places. This is by far the largest though. Ironically one cluster was under a lid with ant-bait in. Some clusters are about the size of a 20c coin. But all are mostly stationary. What’s going on?! #nz

Seeing as this is creating quite a bit of interest in that other place, here are progress photos of my first homegrown bunch of bananas! Very exciting for someone who spent the first 35yrs of their life in the UK with literally freezing cold winters.

Given an awful lot of the submissions on the Bill said that just weren’t enough worthwhile ideas in it, I can’t say that I’m overly surprised he didn’t like what was in them 🤦🏽‍♀️
The majority of the 23,000 public submissions on the Regulatory Standards Bill were never read by ministry staff, but Minister David Seymour says he's comfortable with it because "there just weren't that many" worthwhile ideas submitted by the public.
