Climate adaptation for the electricity grid. Berkeley PhD, DOE SunShot alum. Immigrant, Ukrainian-American, Minnesotan, now in CA. Opinions mine.
What is common knowledge in your field but shocks outsiders?

The amount of electricity that electric lines/equipmt can carry decreases in hot temps -> the grid is less able to deliver power during heatwaves, right when people need AC the most. Most elec planning studies don't (yet) factor this in.
What is common knowledge in your field but shocks outsiders?

About 70% of the energy in the fuel used in an internal combustion engine becomes waste heat. Or, more pithily: 70% of what you pay at the pump goes out your tailpipe.
What is common knowledge in your field but shocks outsiders?

There are more deaths annually due to indoor air pollution from households cooking with solid fuels (e.g. wood) than malaria, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS combined.

Hello world! I'm an energy systems person working on how to adapt our electric grid to climate change. Focused on implementation: how to do med- & long-term critical infrastructure planning for a future that is different than the past. I work at a utility. All views here are mine, not my employer's.
