Specifically, my breasts. I've had them for as long as I can remember, much longer than HRT has pinned them proudly to my chest, pink as boutonnières. These breasts have changed with me, time-lapsing with the messy beauty of a forest floor. They've changed with my body, my beliefs. Our relationship has been a matter of perspective - an ongoing process, constantly occurring, the perpetual rot and decay and rebirth of a person, of nature. It’s random, but purposeful. This transformation has a form all its own. Breasts are a landscape ripe with tension. Breasts are celebrated, shamed, hated, and fetishized across the gender spectrum. Considered unsightly on men, fawned over on women, and, at best, tolerated on those drifting between. Having grown up as a fat “boy,” and transitioning into a woman, breasts were heavy and omnipresent all my life. This book is my attempt at charting my journey, from shame to glory and back again.“ At a summer camp for boys It’s summer at camp at the swim dock. All the boys have their shirts off they’re all laughing, teasing swapping the social slang of insults for friendship of bullying for bouquets of flowers/ The quiet boy laughs doesn’t think of his body much except when he does. When he laughs his breasts jiggle. When the funniest kid in camp points this out brays his joke about milk and udders the dock bursts into a rich symphony of harsh donkey laughs of goose honks of heaving shoulders. The boy’s breasts grow still. They hide in the new canopy of his hunched shoulders. He goes and gets a tee shirt two sizes too big. This is a cave that cannot hide them. Cannot save them from more jokes. Cannot save them from the boys who say they are “tits” But still they hide in the baggy shirt. Still, they decide, it will be years before they come out again.
