On Monday, YouTube agreed to pay $24.5 million to President Trump and several others. This marks the third major social media company to capitulate this year.

And if you care about free speech, this should really piss you off.

My latest for @thefireorg.bsky.social.

Why YouTube caving to Trump is cowardly
YouTube caved to Trump with $24.5M. Profit over principle means free speech loses — and once gone, we don’t get it back.

Yes, previous administrations have violated the First Amendment.

But rather than repudiating those violations, the Trump administration has dramatically escalated how openly and aggressively that constitutional line is crossed.

What happened today is awful. People who fight against gun violence, people who loathe what Charlie Kirk stood for, must also condemn political violence. It’s a vicious cycle. This is a very dangerous moment.

Be careful what you say in Kyle, TX, city council meetings.

During a recent public comment period, Yvonne Flores-Cale suggested city officials were trying to conceal unethical conduct. The mayor cut her off, and the police escorted her away from the mic.

This super cool #Superman bookend must have popped up on everybody’s feed, because in the span of one week I received not one, not two, not three, but FOUR of them as surprise gifts from dear friends—who for some strange reason associate me with Superman.

No clue why!

Based on a recent survey by @thefireorg.bsky.social, expressions like "Sticks and stones..." aren't often heard or used.

Why does this matter? Our idioms reflect our values, and our values dictate our behavior.

These free speech sayings are falling out of favor. What does that mean for our culture?
A world where “Words are violence” is more common than “Sticks and stones…” is a world oriented against free speech principles. But we can turn that around.

Ladies and gents, @jamesgunn.bsky.social's #Superman officially hits theaters worldwide today, and I am feeling just about as happy as I look in this photograph, circa 1988.

As #Superman hits theaters, many may wonder: Can a film about goodness and rising above our daily squabbles to recognize our common humanity really make an impact?

@jamesgunn.bsky.social thinks so. I happen to agree.

Because the character has done it before.

If anyone had a right to hate America, it was Frederick Douglass.

But as his famous 4th of July speech makes clear, Douglass loved America—its principles and its promise.

He criticized it not out of hatred, but hope. A hope we should all have.
