Lauren Nixon’s The Gothic at War is out now! Massive congratulations @laurenjnixon.bsky.social . Super proud of you. Celebrate well! 🥂
I came home last night to find this waiting for me: my first academic monograph. The Gothic at War is developed from my PhD research, with new work on Clara Reeve & Charlotte Smith, exploring the Gothic as a literature of conflict. Thank you to @uniwalespress.bsky.social for being great publishers!

Just back from a few restorative days away in London. One of the many highlights was visiting the Sir John Soanes museum, gamefully accompanied by my 19yo daughter. She loved it too. It’s the combination and juxtaposition of objects in the displays that I love the most.

Rereading this wondrous poem for my editing of Ann Radcliffe’s Mysteries of Udolpho, and thinking that this poem by James Thomson merits a critical resurrection.

Emma McEvoy has written a lovely piece for The Conversation, drawing upon the work that she’s recently published in ‘The Music of the Gothic, 1789–1820’, her new book in our ‘Gothic Elements’ series. Here’s the article: theconversation.com/how-19th-cen... @angelawright1794.bsky.social
How 19th-century melodrama turned the sweet music of gothic into something dark and sinister
In 18th-century gothic, music was a light melodic release from dramatic scares. But with the arrival of melodrama in the 19th century, gothic music became much darker.
