On July 02, 2025, astronomers confirmed the discovery of Comet 3I/ATLAS, marking only the third time in recorded history that an interstellar object (ISO) has been identified passing through our Solar System. This follows the landmark discoveries of 1I/‘Oumuamua in 2017 and 2I/Borisov in 2019. 🧪 🔭 👩‍🔬

Wow. Truly amazing seeing weather patterns on another planet.
High-altitude, noctilucent clouds, moving through the sky.

The Martian sky.

Tomorrow morning, instead of clouds covering the Sun, a partial solar eclipse will cover 30-50% of the Sun instead in the UK!

If anyone is in the Cardiff area and interested in seeing the eclipse, there will be an event held by Astronomy on Tap at Jacob's Antique Centre from 10am until 12pm!🔭

For any astronomy lovers in the Cardiff area, there is an event at Porters pub I co-organise called Astronomy on Tap! This month's event is on the 20th from 6pm with free entry so if you've got an appetite for all things space, it might just be up your street! 🔭 (Photo credit: Porters Pub)

If you’re about this evening, it is the peak of the alignment of the planets! Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune are all visible tonight spanning the length of the sky. More info here: www.theguardian.com/science/2025... 🔭

I'm starting fleshing out a board game idea I've had for a few years now. It's got many different mechanics in it so I'm looking for advice. #boardgame enthusiasts what are your favourite mechanics in board games and why? Also, what are your favourite board games?

The origins of life on Earth are somewhat of a mystery but the asteroid Bennu has recently been shown to contain many of the molecules present for life to form! This includes 14 amino acids, amines, carboxylic acids and more! 🔭

Currently unsure if I'll be continuing in academia at the moment so I want to share one of my favourite images from my PhD. The below image is a collage of the temperature, density, metallicity and radial velocity of the gaseous halo around a galaxy in computational simulations. More in replies 🔭

Happy new year 🎉

2025 marks the 100th anniversary of the publication of Cecilia Payne’s work on the chemistry of stars. Her thesis demonstrated how to interpret the spectra of starlight and thus their chemical composition. It is one of the most important astronomy discoveries ever! Happy 2025! 🔭
