Somehow “guy in the 2020s who projects British power in a suave, confident, and extremely effective way” isn’t too much of a suspension of disbelief but just ignoring the last movie is
James Bond’s death in No Time to Die is causing a nightmare for the next film. Writers are stuck because Bond “was blown to pieces.”

It’s Armistice Day, and a good day to remember that WWI ended as it began and went on: in ghastly, barely comprehensible obscenity

On my honeymoon back in 2016 I had a conversation at a resort bar in Mexico with a libertarian hippie type from SF who thought the drug war was worse for white people, and who called himself a cannabis industry entrepreneur. I think about that guy a lot. He’s probably a billionaire now.
Listen I agree pot should be legal but also it is objectively insane that I can buy this at the grocery store next to the lettuce.

Look I know none of this is the point, but the contrast between Trump talking about Lincoln in his post about marble cladding an entire WH bathroom, and Vidal’s description of how shit the WH was in his Lincoln novel, is funny to me

What’s funny about this is that there was a point in modern history at which Hungary very much punched above its weight power and influence wise and it was when it was a component part of a multi-national (and more or less explicitly anti-nationalist) composite state
incredible that these guys have a massive hard on for a country that, if it were a state, would rank behind kansas in terms of wealth and which would be a total backwater if it weren’t economically integrated with more functional countries

I’m driving to and from STL next week and, as is appropriate when spending way too much time in central Illinois, I’m going to start the audiobook of Gore Vidal’s Lincoln (thanks to a @bornwithatail.bsky.social post from a few weeks back). It’s narrated by Grover Gardner, which makes it even better

Hegel remarks somewhere that all great world-historic facts and personages appear, so to speak, twice. He forgot to add: the first time as tragedy, the second time as farce, and then also a period prequel for good measure

This is only acceptable if the only thing this campus does is teach you how to run various ferry services in New York harbor
I guess this campus is for students in NYC who want to go to a college whose chancellor plays footsie with Trump's authoritarian interference in American higher education.
