As a Minneapolis native I gotta say that the Hennepin County District Attorney’s office is not necessarily who I’d choose to take into a huge and necessary federal/state showdown, but there we are, and if they go for it they go for it
BREAKING: The Hennepin County District Attorney's office says they have jurisdiction to charge the ICE agent involved in the fatal Minneapolis shooting.

"Local law enforcement" murdered George Floyd less than a mile from where this happened

The almost 7YO, when I told her that we weren’t biking to school because it’s cold: “you can get your winter stuff bro.”

So that’s me told.

This is good. More of this.

*After* murdering a woman yesterday, ICE went to a high school in South Minneapolis and started teargassing children.

@repangiecraig.bsky.social this is not what Trump said he would do and you are either lying or obscenely gullible
Craig adds

“What Donald Trump said is that they would target violent criminals in this country under ICE. That is not at all what they're doing, they are literally violating the law.”

This is not the main point, and this could happen anywhere in this country, but I love and miss my hometown and I hate what these fascist ghouls are doing to it and the racist lies they haven't stopped telling since George Floyd.

in these moments, in my view, it is a political and spiritual DUTY for my outrage and anger to be as fresh as if I'd never heard how they shot Fred Hampton in his bed. As fresh as if I didn't know Bobby Hutton was surrendering when they shot him. 1/2

The federal government murdered a woman in cold blood on a street in South Minneapolis, then blatantly and obviously lied about it. Not for nothing, this is less than a mile from where George Floyd was murdered.
Note that DHS's new statement on the ICE killing in Minneapolis today closely tracks the version of events they initially put out about the shooting in Chicago:

The shooter and Bovino have to be arrested. ICE murdered someone in broad daylight.

If this woman is dead the State of Minnesota needs to charge all of the officers involved with murder
Absolutely horrific details about an ICE shooting in Minneapolis.

A witness says a woman was trying to drive away from an ICE operation and the ICE agent "reached across the hood of the car and shot her in the face like three, four times."

Bovino was there.

I've been listening to the audiobook of this, which has prompted me to also listen to the Beatles a lot for the first time in years and, hot take, they were very good (as is the book)

Rommel: the Robert E. Lee of WWII (although to be fair, he was never successful enough to have the opportunity for the kind of regime aligned atrocities that Lee did in MD and PA)
Paused listening to the audiobook of “John and Paul: a Love Story in Songs” before my long drive today, because its prequel just came out: the second part of

I’m sure there are better examples of racism backfiring on the racists than the British “defense” of Singapore from the Japanese, but that’s a good one

The dark Robin Hood movie requires a trailer with the song from the Disney Robin Hood, ominously slow and in a minor key

Popes are also probably a bit sensitive to the whole “kidnapping heads of state” thing, historically speaking
In a stunning breach of diplomatic norms, Trump's ambassador to the Holy See issued a statement that misrepresented Pope Leo’s remarks on Venezuela in order to defend the U.S. military invasion.

Such a misrepresentation is unprecedented in the history of formal relations between the two governments
Trump’s Vatican Ambassador Misrepresents Pope Leo’s Venezuela Remarks to Defend U.S. Military Action
Brian Burch’s public spin on Pope Leo XIV’s Venezuela remarks marks a striking departure from four decades of candor in U.S.–Vatican relations.

Is there any action the US military could take that would be so clearly illegal that the @nytimes.com wouldn’t do this, or nah?
NYT, WaPo learned of the secret US raid on Venezuela soon before it was scheduled to begin but held off publishing what they had at the administration's request to avoid endangering US troops
January 4, 2026 at 4:23 AM
I know that the US illegally kidnapping a foreign head of state as part of an extremely half-assed attempt at regime change is not in any way shape or form the fault of United Airlines, but this still feels like a slightly surreal primary source of late empire.
January 4, 2026 at 3:22 AM
I started reading the Man Without Qualities. It’s good so far, but unfortunately the picture of an empire committing suicide in an atmosphere of surreal excess, frustrated violence, and incompetence just doesn’t feel relevant.
