Is there any action the US military could take that would be so clearly illegal that the @nytimes.com wouldn’t do this, or nah?
NYT, WaPo learned of the secret US raid on Venezuela soon before it was scheduled to begin but held off publishing what they had at the administration's request to avoid endangering US troops

I know that the US illegally kidnapping a foreign head of state as part of an extremely half-assed attempt at regime change is not in any way shape or form the fault of United Airlines, but this still feels like a slightly surreal primary source of late empire.

I started reading the Man Without Qualities. It’s good so far, but unfortunately the picture of an empire committing suicide in an atmosphere of surreal excess, frustrated violence, and incompetence just doesn’t feel relevant.

Obviously this would all still be unbelievably horrifying but if the wildly incompetent Trump DOJ can’t get a conviction it would be very funny.
The legal reasoning Trump has given for arresting Maduro is that he violated a 1934 law banning private ownership of machine guns that applies only in the USA, not foreign countries.

The Trump Admin is so incompetent that they can't even concoct a semi-plausible excuse for their illegal actions.

I’m sure that living through one of the periodic crises of masculinity during the Late Victorian British Empire would’ve been viscerally embarrassing too, but this is really something

This is what Marco Rubio signed up for - all the indignities and insults added up to this, that he gets to play 2003 Neocon in the Western Hemisphere

Sometimes I think about how Europe went absolutely insane in the 1920s and 30s but it followed a war that killed an entire generation of men, and all it’s taking for us is the end of the Cold War, one terrorist attack, and a Black president

What historical fiction about the ancient world should I read in 2026

Eric Adams very publicly moving into a nice Manhattan apartment and then running for mayor of Ft. Lee, NJ would be an incredible bit
Will Eric Adams now admit he lives in New Jersey do we think

Wrap it up folks, dad of the year for 2026 awarded on day one, to me, for skidding out while playing tag on the beach and knocking over my 4YO

Fun fact: Woody Guthrie wrote this song about the spot in Santa Barbara where they sell a small ice cream for $9

There’s a phrase in WI that Madison is an island “surrounded by reality,” and I refuse to believe that a rich guy in Waukesha driving a huge truck and getting a steady drip of right wing slop on tv and social media is more in tune with reality than me
Another good practice for the New Year would be for all the non-fascists in America who want to opine about politics to really begin believing that urban America is Real America & that its denizens are The Authentic People. Get some self-respect & drop the volkish nationalist view that they're not
And I think liberals should stop taking the bait and ceding ground on immigration.

Immigration is good. Multiculturalism is good. Free trade is good. Stop being embarrassed to say so.

Lobster risotto in the vacation rental kitchen, with a quick lobster stock I made earlier from shell and supermarket chicken stock (cooking fancy meals in somewhat janky rental kitchens is my travel superpower)

Last sunset of 2025, muted but beautiful. Happy New Year. 2026 is a good year to beat these bastards.

Because they’ve come down to us as bare stone, worn by thousands of years, most people don’t know that this is an historically accurate depiction of the decoration of ancient Egyptian monuments
I’m currently at the Washington Monument:

For context, Jews were less than 1% of the population of prewar Germany, and about 10% of the population of prewar Poland
This should not be shrugged aside. They have stopped with the fake 22 million illegal immigrants things and are flat out saying we want to deport 10's of millions of citizens and legal residents from "third world countries" Basically they are advocating removing 1/3 of the population on a gov site.

My third year of book logging. Favorite fiction of the year was Olivia Manning’s Balkan Trilogy and Pat Barker’s Regeneration Trilogy. Favorite NF was “One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This” by Omar El Akkad and @adapalmer.bsky.social’s “Inventing the Renaissance.”

The Wolves need a PG…
Pressure and patience don’t mix.

That’s an annual truth in the NBA this time of year. Does your team need to make a trade before the deadline?

Let’s start with Trae Young and the Hawks:
