Ní hábhair é a chara.
‘His friend is not subjects.’

S: (é) a chara ‘his friend’ (agus fo-ainmní ann)
P: ábhair ‘subjects, matters’ (iolra den fhocal ‘ábhar’)
Copula: ní (an fhoirm dhiúltach)

‘ní ábhair’ a bheadh ceart de réir an chaighdeáin, ach is sine an nós ‘h-’ a chur tar éis ‘ní’ na copaile

One interesting rule of #irish #grammar that many people struggle with, but it seems well alive in native Irish. A 🧵.

If a proper name (of person or place) is referring to the name itself, & not to a specific person, it’s treated as indefinite after the copula.

Deirtear nach gcáintear leabhra Gaeilge sách minic.

Mar sin, déanfaidh mé cáineadh beag ar Scott Pilgrim as Gaeilge: ní thuigeann an t-aistritheoir an chopail agus tá cuid den aistriúchán in áiteacha eile chomh ciotach sin go bhfuil sé barrúil.

The guide I wrote a while ago about ‘being’ in Irish (the tá/bí verb vs the copula ‘is’). It’s fairly comprehensive and, I hope, helpful to learners:
