Wishing international law was in fact "gayer"...
“International law is gay” does seem to be the general attitude of this administration.
right. and like it's not like they're hiding it now. all of the major pundits (knowles + walsh) basically think the takeaway from Iraq War was not that PNAC was right to want to build democracy, but a world that is explicitly built around turning America into an empire

Meloni's justification of Trump's attack on Venezuela (self-defense against hybrid attacks eg drug trafficking) is quite interesting: does it open the door to attacking foreign countries for organised crime or "instrumentalisation of migration"?

Can a MAGA supporter explain to me how will the seizure of Venezuela oil production by private corporations compensate and pay for the public expense of deploying US military, technical experts, and administrators? Will Trump expropriate corporations? Tax their profits and redistribute them? 🤔

Running the country until "safe transition" is guaranteed - isn't this the same they said in the UNSC Res on Gaza Plan? #venezuela

Following very closely the situation in Venezuela.

We stand by the people of Venezuela and support a peaceful and democratic transition.

Any solution must respect international law and the UN Charter.

Marco Rubio is reportedly saying Maduro will stand trial in US courts.

Which means it’s now the US administration’s position that US courts can hold foreign presidents, but not the US president, accountable for crimes.

Awful statement from the EU. Loose reference to UN Charter in second part of the post and call for "restraint". This seems to suggest the EU will embrace the narrative that a US armed attack and leader kidnap is a "peaceful transition" to "democracy". We learned nothing from history honestly
I have spoken with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and our Ambassador in Caracas. The EU is closely monitoring the situation in Venezuela.

The EU has repeatedly stated that Mr Maduro lacks legitimacy and has defended a peaceful transition. (1/2)

The US has launched an unprovoked and illegal attack on Venezuela.

This is a brazen attempt to secure control over Venezuelan natural resources.

It is an act of war that puts the lives of millions of people at risk, and should be condemned by anyone who believes in sovereignty & international law.

I'm monitoring Italian, Spanish, other EU news outlets and they haven't even announced Maduro's alleged kidnap so far. No breaking news in Italian tv, they talk about puppies and cooking and Shrek. British media have loads of flaws lately but remain the only providers of some serious journalism imho
It’s old-fashioned to defend mainstream journalism these days but some of the most reliable reporting from people actually on the ground will be the AP and Reuters the next 24 hours. Your Substack journalist writing takes will be using frontline reporting from them.

This is extremely horrifying and of course illegal. On a more minor note, it'll likely influence the upcoming elections in Colombia, possibly favouring pro-Trump far right candidate Abelardo de la Espriella as voters fear possible US retorsion against a left-wing government
