snippet of work in progress: “So how long have you been dating?” Mary drops the question between them and it snaps Castiel back to attention like a rubber band, yanking him from his absent-minded observation of the room. Dean’s knife clatters to the counter at the same time, his eyes widening and his mouth opening and closing a few times before he manages to speak. “Mom! It’s not—we’re not—it’s not like that, okay?” Mary puts her hands up, palms facing outward. “Okay, okay! My bad!” Her tone is apologetic but Castiel can see her expression is amused. She turns to him, ignoring Dean’s continued sputtering. “I’m sorry, Castiel, I didn’t mean to assume anything.” He has honestly no idea what to say so he just smiles and gives a little shrug, taking another sip of his water to cover his lack of words. She leans closer over the counter and drops her voice as though pretending to whisper. “It’s just that you’re exactly Dean’s type, so—” “Jesus, Mom!” Dean groans, his face an impressive shade of red.
