This semester I've noticed that there have been several comparisons between humans (more specifically women) and animals. This story adds to that comparison, especially when it comes to the desire for freedom #bsueng490

#bsueng490 So would we consider her some sort of robot/cyborg that doesn't really conform to gender norms? I mean, we see the "metal" parts taking over her body with the head injury and the pregnancy, but also the not really conforming to a specific gender....

#bsueng490 I honestly like seeing the switch between the dancing at the beginning of the movie and towards the end of the movie, the perception, the reasoning.... interesting transformation

#bsueng490 He looked at her and really said, "Yes, that is my missing son." NO NO NO NO, that is not your son, sir, you need to run

#bsueng490 The whole car, metal plate in the head thing that Alexia has going on reminds me a lot of the cyborg theory we read earlier this semester

I think this speaks a lot to the fact that women go through so much during a pregnancy, while the man does what..... The husband feels little to no sympathy for the physical and mental toll that the wife is going through #bsueng490

#bsueng490 Comparing women to animals…. Dehumanizing, ownership, control?

I genuinely enjoyed how much I wasn't able to predict this reading. Her transformation, he relationship with her family and culture, everything was so new and intriguing to me #bsueng490

"Certainly there are very real differences between us of race, age, and sex. But it is not those differences between us that are separating us. It is rather our refusal to recognize those differences, and to examine the distortions which result from our misnaming them and their effects." #bsueng490

What was said during Liz's discussion catalyst about Binti's community not respecting the way she is showing her culture is a very interesting part of this text. I can't wait to see how her transformation is affected by that prejudice #bsueng490

I lowkey don't like when books I enjoy have a pretty lackluster ending. Like, yes, we found out the killer, and yes, Cassie gets her happy ending, but I almost wanted more drama #bsueng490

I think this friend group that Cassie/Lexie is a part of has a lot of unrevealed red flags. There just seems to be something off with them. but I can't quite put my finger on it yet #bsueng490

Just a thought based on how women are typically written, but do we think the emotional attachment that Cassie is having towards this case is meant to be because she's a woman, or do you think there is something deeper going on? #bsueng490

“Patriarchal power is stealthily handed over to the self-punishing regime of the fashion and beauty industry, which has the added value of promoting the idea that women self-police and have become their own toughest judges.” (McRobbie 626) #bsueng490

“I was never afraid of getting killed and I was never afraid of losing my nerve. My kind of courage holds up best under fire; it’s different dangers, more refined and insidious ones, that shake me.” (French 53) #bsueng490

“Perhaps he would take flesh one last time, when the world was ending, just to watch it burn.” (194) I think the level of resentment towards the body throughout the whole novel is interesting. Sometimes it seems like the Ogbanje appreciate the body, but other times not #bsueng490

“I went mad too young, you see, they couldn’t wait to ride me. I only scream on my better days, crippled in meat and hot skin.” (162) This poem felt like a bridge between Ada and the brothersisters. We get the view of Ada but also slightly how the others impact her life #bsueng490

“We have all been injured, profoundly. We require regeneration , not rebirth, and the possibilities for our reconstruction include the utopian dream of hope for a monstrous world without gender.” (354) #bsueng490
