Last night I watched the 1945 Picture of Dorian Gray with Angela Lansbury and Peter Lawford and this fabulous painting by Ivan Albright, which resides today in the Art Institute of Chicago. Fabulous movie visually: it won an Oscar for cinematography.

Cleaning out my office for a cross campus move and encountering papers that make me realize just how many of the opportunities I was afforded on my way up in my career are gone: the NEH Fellowship at the AAS, gone; the Advanced Research Collaborative at CUNY, gone.

Another call for proposals: @beltpublishing.bsky.social nascent "Alternative History" series is expanding. We've done CLE and PIT. Both start with prehistory & are short; otherwise the "Alternative" is flexible.

Elon Musk getting bankrupted, losing his government contracts, and/or otherwise taken down would be very satisfying, but it still wouldn’t repair all the generational damage that this administration has done to our country in the name of “government efficiency.”
