Q: Kaitlyn, why are you so obsessed with #torii gates?

A: Because they're so much more beautiful, diverse, & wide-ranging than the stereotype we have of the red Inari or Floating torii at #Shinto shrines in Japan!

Exhibit A: a torii raibow⛩️🌈

It’s that time of year!

From today, and running through Friday: SSF Regional Symposium for Asia-Pacific, in Shizuoka; looking forward to the week!

:o!
A tsunami warning — meaning waves of up to 3 meters are possible — was issued for Okinawa on Wednesday morning after a 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Taiwan, according to the Japanese Meteorological Agency.

Wrong assumptions undermine the argument! As an anthropologist whose first fieldsite was a- literal- community of Satos, the culturally appropriate answer is: use yago!

誤った前提が議論を台無しにしている!佐藤さんたちの文字通りの集落を最初のフィールドとした人類学者として、文化的に適切な答えは「ヤゴと一緒」である!
Everyone in Japan will be called Sato by 2531 unless marriage law changed, says professor
Sato will become the only option by 2531, suggests modelling as part of campaign to overturn outdated law requiring spouses to have same surname

Recovery will take time and support is needed! I visited this family (Miyamoto) as a part of the 7なな Support Group where we volunteered &passed on wisdom from personal experiences from 3.11. In the words of one of our members, "you need to think of recovery as taking 10 years”

Felt slightly larger than just a 1

“Here, here!” to the “as good for the human race” part.
Including all components of social-ecological systems in ecosystem based management is necessary for sustainability .

Larkin's Epitaph for MSY (1977)

Here lies the concept, MSY.
It advocated yields too high,
And didn't spell out how to slice the pie.
We bury it with the best of wishes,
Especially on behalf of fishes.
We don't know yet what will take its place,
But hope it's as good for the human race.

Really??? Over for everyone, not just the Teamsters?

As a member of a taiko (Japanese drum) group, I’ve wondered how many were lost in the recent tsunami. Nice to see one, at least, has been found and returned.

AKA "snow monsters". :)
Finally got a (relatively) big snowfall last night!

Earthquakes began around 3am local time, with the volcano erupting again. I feel for the residents of Grindavík.

It looks like things are still tough for hunters, fishermen, and residents in northern Greenland. 2024/1/11. :'(

Felt that one!
Ishikawa Noto Hanto earthquake aftershock

😢

I remember that!

Wonder what it means when the news reports that the ground has been uplifted in an earthquake? Here's a stark reality from Fukami Fishing Port in Ishikawa-ken.

The ground rose 3.9m; local sea is 1-2m shallower

Yet another reason it will be difficult for fishers to begin again after the disaster

Yep. In March 2011, the first news I found about "my town" and especially specific neighborhoods where fisher friends lived was via Twitter
I don’t think many non-Japanese speakers know how dominant/popular Twitter has been in Japan—probably because unlike other social networks, it’s friendly to pseudonymity+ it’s text-based rather than image or video-centered. Its disintegration has real consequences for Japan (and elsewhere).
It's hardly the most important thing here, but the disaster in Ishikawa is a tangible reason why Elon's management of Twitter is such a problem...in Japan especially, Twitter has been a source of real-time news, esp in situations like this, and now it's a vanity project for a white supremacist

Japan, 2024 Day #3: Japan's oldest arcade (covered shopping street) currently burning to the ground... which follows Day #1 (Major earthquake and tsunami) and Day #2 (Coast Guard relief plane struck by a commercial airliner)

Time to think of safe n happy days: let's bring out the sleeping cats!

me, too!

As a Miyagi resident, I can’t help but feel the serious of the instructions us related to (hard) lessons learned from 2011

Feeling for those along the coast in Ishikawa and the Sea of Japan coast

Alerts sounded on the phone even in Miyagi

2 earthquakes on the Noto Peninsula (Japan) within 5 minutes. Warning alerts rand even here, more than 600kms away
