Mary Somerville - the person for whom the word scientist was coined by William Whewell in his 1834. She was a polymath, an intellectual tour de force at a time when teaching women to read and write let alone think deeply was frowned upon or ignored ⚒️🧪🌊

By 1982 the dangers of climate change from carbon dioxide build-up were extremely well-established in the relevant scientific communities, & being reported in the popular press (and, intermittently) on television.

The Reagan administration's response was basically "suck it, loser hippy commie scum"

Here's all 8 pages of CO2 Newsletter Vol 1 no 1 (Oct 1979)

Geologist William N. Barbat published the Newsletter for 3 years (18 issues). They are incredible - detailed, precise and, ultimately, heart-breaking because they reveal how much was known, how many warnings were ignored.

September 2 or 3, 1983, at the tensest moment of the Cold War.

Three weeks later, Stansilav Petrov..

The only reason we didn't all fry was two calm, disobedient Soviet military men.
Two MIG-23s identified the aircraft correctly as a civilian television plane.
[The pilot] said ‘Are you sure you want me to shoot?’

And they said ‘You have your orders; shoot it down.’

This young pilot then responded ‘We’re low on fuel. We’re returning to base.’

Destroy and corrupt, always in more of a hurry;
Spreading the desert to the forests of the Amazon;
To the living hearts of our cities; to our very own hearts.
