In short, maybe what we need is games *not* filled with a million different activities trying to be all things to all people, and a greater emphasis on focused experiences, same way the mid-budget movie (or the mid-list novel) seems to have gone extinct when there's clearly people who'd go for 'em.
On the other hand, I think it's also ignoring the ballooning cost of *making* AAA games that didn't exist in those games of yore, and if they're falling prey to the 'every film a blockbuster' mentality of Hollywood. The closest to AAA I've gotten in the last year is Expedition 33.
