Photo taken at Forest Farm NR - Cardiff - South Wales The UK Kingfisher is a small, brilliantly coloured bird often spotted as a fast-moving, electric-blue flash along rivers, lakes, and canals. Though they are quite small—roughly the size of a sparrow or robin—their striking colours and distinctive shape make them unforgettable. Here is a description of a UK Kingfisher designed to highlight its most recognizable features: 1. Striking Colours The Back and Head: The back, top of the head, and tail are a brilliant, metallic turquoise blue that seems to glow or appear as a vibrant streak when it flies. The Chest and Underside: The breast is a rich, warm chestnut-orange (or rusty copper) colour. Facial Markings: It has a white patch on its throat and a white patch on the sides of its neck, which contrast with its orange cheeks. 2. Unique Shape and Silhouette Long Bill: The most defining feature is its disproportionately long, dagger-shaped black bill. This beak is designed for fishing and can look quite large compared to its body. Small Body: It has a very short tail and short legs, giving it a compact, "dumpy" appearance, especially when perched. Photo taken at Cosmeston lakes ~ South Wales The Bohemian Waxwing is a stunning, medium-sized songbird, often described as a "masterpiece" of nature. Roughly the size of a starling, this bird is known for its elegant, silky-smooth appearance. Here is a description of the Bohemian Waxwing, focusing on its distinctive features: Plump and Sleek: It is a fairly stocky, thick-necked bird. The Crest: It has a very prominent, pointed crest of feathers on its head that often sticks up jauntily. Tail: It has a relatively short, square-tipped tail. Its body is a soft, buff-grey or cinnamon-brown colour. It features a striking, bold black mask that runs across its eyes and extends to the back of its head. It has a black patch under its chin. The wings are quite colourful, featuring dark, jet-black flight feathers with bright white and yellow, wingtip "edges". The tail has a very distinct, bright, and bold yellow band at the very tip. The feathers underneath the tail are a rich, cinnamon or reddish-brown. The name "waxwing" comes from tiny, glossy, bright red, waxy tips on their wing feathers. These look like small droplets of red sealing wax and are more prominent on older birds. They are very social, often appearing in large, noisy, fast-moving groups.
