More interesting than bsky mods struggling with jokes: "Death threats" (which this one isn't) land in the backlog for a month before someone looks at them.
Legally interesting, but it also means that the correct response to credible threats is now "ignore mods, take the nuclear option directly"
CORRECTION: The post was made on Oct 10. Due to a backlog in cases, our mod team didn’t review and take action until Nov 11, which is when we engaged with the account owner about the reason for suspension.

Algorithms? Datamining? Brainrot? You don’t need those things to have a social network. As we knew back in the BBS days, long before anyone coined the phrase “social network”, all …read more

Not sure if this single seat arrangement is hostile architecture or just a dream come true for socially awkward people

Learned two things today:
- I don't know how to properly reverse-proxy webrtc and I'm too lazy to learn it rn, so my testing @stream.place instance is going to be offline until I get the motivation for it
- there's a vintage cartoon stream live 24/7 on it and it's AWESOME

I rented a little cloud vm (really little, 2 cores and 4GB RAM) because it's AARCH64/ARMv8 and I was curious about ARM servers, and so far that thing outperforms any Xeon in my homelab and an EPYC Rome in another cloud vps in single threaded stuff and 2 core VMs in multi threaded 🤔

I used to be pissed at my dad for not getting a hearing aid out of pride while he claimed that "his hearing is perfectly fine" (it wasn't, he has one now), but I need new glasses with more than -1.5 apparently and now I get it.
"My eyes are fine :)" as I sit like a shrimp 30cm away from the screen 🥲

I just spent 10 minutes trying to formulate a very professional sounding request to unblock ports 25/465 on my PDS' cloud firewall so it can relay mod mail and such on its own, only for Hetzner to hit me with an instant "Yeah it's fine dude, have fun" after clicking submit lmao

Guess who just learned what a head crash at 15k RPM sounds like
I'm surely not going to regret using 14 year old hard drives that spent their working lives spinning at 15k RPM

(On a related note: This is an 8GBit FC shelve in spite of its age, it's always interesting to me how FC never really caught on outside of datacenters for NAS stuff - it was sooo fast)

Every time I'm confronted with US domestic politics, it's either "Senator Steve McBurgerking defends his son hunting homeless people for sport" or shit like this
In the week leading up to the New York City election, Andrew Cuomo used AI MPREG Schoolhouse Rock slop to attack Zohran Mamdani.

The ad features:
- Out of sync animations
- An anthropomorphic phone with a ChatGPT logo that wanders onto the scene
- A pregnant bill with thick red lips
Andrew Cuomo Uses AI MPREG Schoolhouse Rock Bill to Attack Mamdani, Is Out of Ideas
Uhh, is ChatGPT the dad or?

Having a well thought out system for using Obsidian and creating structured knowledge is cool and all, but have you tried constantly creating new scratchpad notes and dumping random snippets, links and screenshots in there forever?

Every time I remember that DL inference over graphs is really cool and that learning it might be fun, I'm quickly reminded that my brain just isn't that amazing and reading an endless stream of math notation makes it very unhappy and tired and I learn nothing 😭

Wild how the X-600 used to be exceedingly rare and cost megabucks outside of Japan (or at least in Germany) and ~10 years after I last looked, you can get it bundled with the 50/1.4 (which is _fantastic_ if it's the appropriate MD-III version) for 162€ + shipping

I stopped using GPhotos a while ago because, y'know, it's Google and I don't trust them. So almost all the pictures in there are ~10-20 years old, which makes "Hey, remember that?" notifications either very nostalgic, or _very_ weird

Anyway, enjoy this 17 year old pic of duct tape ass at Area4 2008

I just realized that my Frankenstein X-500¹ has had the same roll of film in it for 3 months now - currently on frame 25 - because I primarily want to test this chunky lens with color film and find _nothing_ that warrants a 200mm lens other than a few birds and a helicopter 🙃

¹it's 30% X-700
Interesting flea market find: a rare example of a lens that is both rare, because it cost megabucks back in the day and few people bought it, and fairly cheap now (20€!) because it's a 70s zoom lens and those all kind of suck. It's a massive steel behemoth, too.
But as always: 20 bucks is 20 bucks.

Parents, make sure you're careful this Halloween! Inside this Snickers we've just found the 1444 map of Boarstall, one of the oldest maps of an English village and a fantastic example of late medieval cartography.
