The Dean “also clarified that faculty may assign textbooks with chapters that cover transgender identity, so long as they do not talk about the material or include it on assignments or exam questions.”

And they call this an education?

A&M officials have also instructed English faculty not to teach books in core classes that have major plotlines concerning gay, lesbian or transgender identities.

"If you're going to join any protests, as is your right under the First Amendment, you need to think beyond your physical well-being to your digital security, too."
Just days into 2026, the killing of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good by a federal immigration officer in Minneapolis, Minnesota, has sparked protests around the US.

If you’re planning to protest, here’s how to safeguard your digital security.
How to Protest Safely in the Age of Surveillance
Law enforcement has more tools than ever to track your movements and access your communications. Here’s how to protect your privacy if you plan to protest.

I attended a MigraWatch training for this story and one of the key pieces of advice for when ICE appears was to record everything.

Kids at my elementary school in 1990s Lawrence, Mass., exclaimed a dragged out "ayyy" when someone got in trouble.
I only learned later in life that “umbers” is not a generally shared children’s taunt—used to hurl derision at another child who has done something that would get them in trouble—but an extremely local Burqueño regional vernacular: “Umberrrrrs”

What the heck did the rest of you say to express this?

Our rental car for our Christmas trip turned out to be a BMW. This is the fanciest thing I have ever driven, projects directions onto the windshield along with little figures showing how far your car is from the one in front. It's like a video game HUD. Kinda overwhelming at first.

The debate about whether "Wonderful Christmastime" sucks or not is just a boring proxy battle for McCartney-Lennon disputes.

The real holiday song debate is whose version of "Santa Clause Is Coming to Town" reigns supreme: The Jackson 5's or Bruce Springsteen's?

This was a special story to write. The Scene's last story takes a look at the hard work the volunteers are Music City MigraWatch do to verify ICE activity. They keep their neighbors informed and train others to do the same. And because of that, we named them our Nashvillians of the Year.
This week's cover story: The 2025 Nashvillians of the Year are the people behind Music City MigraWatch. These everyday citizens document ICE in their own communities.
