Happiness is in the little things: those nice microbes🦠🧫
Check our last manuscript now up on biorXiv! We analyzed the inhibitory capabilities of isolated aquatic bacteria towards different Legionella spp. and discovered variable outcomes, while reinforcing the role of biosurfactants (we specifically detected viscosin) as anti-Legionella compounds.
Variable inhibition of different Legionella species by antagonistic bacteria
The genus Legionella includes opportunistic pathogens inhabiting engineered aquatic ecosystems, where managing their presence and abundance is crucial for public health. In these environments, Legione...

After 4 exciting years, I defended my PhD!

This has been an amazing journey that taught me a lot and that I truly enjoyed.

Thanks @drinkmic.bsky.social for the insipiring science we got to do, your support, and the good times!

This is not over, though... More Legionella research to follow soon!

Microbiology opinions needed:
A thick white jelly-like biofilm in a toilet tank (cistern). Water is groundwater decalcified with ion-exchange. System is about 4 years in operation. Microscopy shows loads of bacteria.
Any suggestions on a probable cause would be most appreciated!

New preprint from our group just dropped in bioRxiv! Alessio @alecava.bsky.social investigated the impact of two common DNA extraction methods on microbial community analysis in general and specifically on Legionella quantification.

@drinkmic.bsky.social and I had the chance to comment on our latest paper about #Legionella in shower hoses!

Check that out in #FEMSmicroblog! Link below:
