The Armstrong family were important local landowners, Sir William built the first house in the country with lights powered by hydro-electricity in the 1880s around here. This was such a technological wonder that crowned heads of state visited, such as the future Edward VII and the Shah of Persia!

Rothbury 1921.
Great stories with today’s new map, including Robert Douglas being ‘reduced to beggary’ by a 1738 fire, a ‘wild west drama’ in 1920 when two Russian sailors broke into a brewery & nearly killed a policeman, & links to the 1715 Jacobite rebellion!

Alan Godfrey fills his notes with history in our #new map, notably the wild, busy life of Forde Grey (1655-1701) who faced trial for ‘whoredom, fornication and adultery’, plotted to kill Charles II & then was Lord Privy Seal!

More epic stories here… www.alangodfreymaps.co.uk/nbl1613.htm

A little added extra to our map - the difference a few short decades bring!
This publication has two maps about 25 years apart, it's utterly incredible how profound a change the railways made to the UK landscape!

Forest Gate 1867-93.

One of our many #London maps, this part of the capital is indelibly linked to the Gurney family, who originated in Norwich and would rise like a rocket in the world of banking before exploding spectacularly after many errors and missteps, as told in the accompanying map notes.

Spellchecker occasionally dislikes the place names on our maps, and this is one of them!
As with most places in the UK, here we find a village & it’s orbiting hamlets stuffed with history, story and interest. Mentions of royalty, Empire and more can be found in many of them, as with today’s example.
Great Ayton & the Langbaurgh Ridge, 1913.
Occasionally our map notes can get excitingly dynastic, as here… Obviously we have the famous Cook family but the Nevill, Holland, Foulis, Coulson, Constantine, Proctor, Richardson, Raikes names are discussed too.

Health reformer Sir Edwin Chadwick (1800-90) was born on this day in Longsight, Manchester. His 'Report on the Sanitary Condition of the Labouring Population of Great Britain' (1842) led to the Public Health Act 1848, the first step on a long road to improving public health.

Families and familial connections knit our nations together. It’s fascinating to read a set of maps and see how local families influence different towns & villages, how everything is interconnected, starting at street-level and building up to empires, on the backs of local families & personalities.

“This wonderfully detailed map covers Doncaster at a fascinating moment in time, enjoying its final flourish as a major coaching town, while clearing the decks for its oncoming role as one of our great railway centres”.
Doncaster Town Centre appears to be cautiously advancing towards the dominant new railway in 1850; the large station, five lines & Goods Shed are all the more impressive when we remember that the first passenger service ran only 25 years before publication.

A centre of the English silk trade in the mid 1800s & hub for the Co-Operative movement – the local society provided allotments, housing, retail & factory jobs etc. As the silk trade declined, lace rose, later to be replaced by corset production.

Alan Godfrey’s introduction to our Bawtry 1901 map can’t be bettered, so we’ve sampled it alongside a map sample from the town.
Please note, the printed version is clearer.
