I'm old and well travelled having lived in Australia, UK, Germany, Canada and now the US. I lived 42 years in the American South before finally deciding a couple of years ago to settle in the Pacific NW which I like a lot. I grew up in Adelaide.
We finally get to ride the northern Lightrail (LINK) extension to Pioneer Square this time. It’s going to take some 30 minutes.

I’ve borrowed via Libby the audio book *How to be Free * written by A. A. Long who is a professor emeritus at the University of California at Berkeley. The author has a specialty in Hellenistic Philosophy and in particular was an earl... https://chemgis.me/2025/10/02/ive-borrowed-via-libby-the.html

If you told me I could have a great review of my new book from the NYT or from Cory Doctorow, I'd take the latter in a heartbeat

I need to remember the photos that I’ve already taken. These two were taken next to the Edmonds, Washington, Pier a couple of months apart with different cameras;  top is a Sony A6000 and below is a Panasonic  Lumix LX5.

I am happy to be using film emulators for straight out of camera photography. Here are a couple of examples both taken with my Nikon Z 50ii camera. The left shot is a Portra variation and the right is a Kodachrome. These were taken on different... https://chemgis.me/2025/07/31/i-am-happy-to-be.html

Too bad the Ivory app for Mastodon hasn’t (so far at least) been made available for Bluesky. I’m curious about what impact this company that started out with a very nice Twitter app could make on the increasingly popular Bluesky. There are, of course, already alternatives to the official app.

I’m presently reading on Kindle Dreyer’s English by Benjamin Dreyer and I have to say I’m learning a lot about what rules of English I can break and when I should perhaps be more cautious about doing so. I’m also glad that I have t... https://chemgis.me/2025/07/09/im-presently-reading-on-kindle.html

I’m continuing to read Chasing Hope: A Reporter’s Life by Nicholas Kristof. In my case I’m actually listening to the book using Kindle’s Assistive Reader. However the voice is female. I probably should have used an American male voi... https://chemgis.me/2025/06/21/im-continuing-to-read-chasing.html

A photo taken on the Little Bear Trail near Chelan.  We decided to stop here before heading back to Seattle yesterday and we managed to get in a good walk as well as take some photos of wildflowers.

Happy with the results of my eye exam. The next appointment is not for another 7 months, when I have an annual visual field scan.

I've been using the Mood iPhone camera app for the last month or so. The pictures that I took in Winthrop and future shots that I publish will probably also be taken with this app. I’m enjoying using it with its different “film” modes.

And another photo from Winthrop.  We always like to check out the bookstores wherever we go.

Here we are in [Winthrop](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winthrop,_Washington) on the Eastern edge of the Northern Cascades just a little over two week since returning from Japan. I need to write some entries about that trip before too long!

Watching "Nightbitch" starring Amy Adans and it's getting increasingly strange. I think I recommend this movie but I'll wait until I finish it.

I just checked some of my old notes and I see that I had a blood test back in 2016 that showed antibodies for measles and mumps. Good to know that I have immunity after being exposed sometime as a child in the late ’40s or ’50s.
