A Discord message from user AErchivist. The post reads: "DISCORD IS IMPLEMENTING AGE VERIFICATION MEASURES GLOBALLY IN MARCH @everyone In the latest of a series of attacks on digital privacy, Discord has announced plans to implement age verification measures globally. These are the same age verification measures introduced in the UK and Australia last year, requiring some users to provide legal ID or use facial age estimation tools to access specific features. In the interest of ensuring the information I share is as accurate as possible, you can read Discord’s official statement here: https://discord.com/press-releases/discord-launches-teen-by-default-settings-globally A few important notes, to combat any misinformation: - Not all users will be required to verify their age. Most users probably won’t. Similarly to YouTube, Discord will be utilizing an age inference model which estimates a user’s age based on their activity. - If a user is judged to be under 18 based on their activity, they will be unable to access age-restricted channels or servers, unblur spoilered images, speak on Discord stages, or access DMs from users they do not know. - Discord claims that data used to verify a user’s age will be processed on-device to ensure privacy. You shouldn’t trust this. This isn’t good. I don’t think I need to tell anyone here that. In recent years, we have witnessed a massive uptick in attacks on the digital privacy of adults worldwide, often masquerading as attempts to protect children from potentially dangerous content. Attacks that will inevitably be weaponized against marginalized communities and voices. That will silence political discontent. That will be used to monitor and punish our online activities. This is how a surveillance state starts." "WHAT CAN WE DO? The only thing a company like Discord cares about more than maintaining an active user base is making a profit. I heavily encourage folks to cancel their Nitro subscriptions. Stop giving them your money. You can also voice your displeasure directly to Discord support. Be clear that you are canceling your nitro directly because of these age verification policies. https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/requests/new But I think we also need to step back and look at the bigger picture here. This isn’t just an issue of Discord making a poor choice, this is part of a larger war on our ability to use the internet freely. One which has been brewing for a long time now. If we don’t act, we may soon live in a world where these sorts of age verification policies become mandatory. Where moving platforms to protect your privacy isn’t an option anymore. Several countries have already passed laws requiring some level of age verification to access large social media platforms. Many other bills are on the way around the world. I can’t list every bill in every country, and I’m yet to find a good global tracker, but the current threat in the United States is KOSA. Means to keep up with your friends, communities, and creators you support. But don’t give up just yet. I’ll be honest, I’m scared. Discord has been such a central hub for my community for the last 4 years, and losing it risks everything I’ve worked so hard to build. I’ve fought tooth and nail for the chance of making this my full time job, and I’m not going to stop fighting, but things like this are extremely discouraging at a point where I’m already burnt out and struggling. Where I already feel like I’ve fallen off. Where I’m already tired. But I believe we can create change in the world. Enough people are canceling their Nitro that the servers for doing so crashed earlier. Discord has noticed. It is vital, in these moments, that we stand by our communities and defend them. Running from platform to platform isn’t going to save us - no individual space will ever be perfect for long - and it is worth fighting for the spaces we enjoy. If you care about this space we’ve built together, I ask you to stick around and speak up." "SO, WHAT ARE THE ALTERNATIVES? I do not plan on leaving Discord. Not yet, anyway. And I’ll be honest, I am in a unique position. I’ve already been investigated by the FBI for my activities as a content creator. The government knows who I am, where I live, and what I do. So does any company that’s paying me. I don’t have much privacy left to protect. On top of that, I am just one disabled creator on the internet. My time and capacity are limited. Posting on half a dozen platforms just isn’t viable for me without delegating tasks to my moderators, who are also people with their own lives. I want to work on establishing the means to make more platforms viable - no one platform will ever be truly safe, after all - but it will take time, energy, and more hands than we currently have. I ask, again, that people do not give up on Discord just yet. But if you’d like to establish an alternative means of keeping up with my activities and engaging with the community, here are the options: Stoat I am currently working on building a backup of the server on Stoat, but it will take time, as Stoat is not as well established of a platform yet. I will drop the link in an announcement once it is complete, but please be patient. This will not be replacing the Discord as of now, but will exist as an alternative should we need to relocate. Reddit This has existed for awhile, and I would like to build it into a larger space for sharing fan content, thoughts, and community updates. I’ll be working with my moderation team on making this happen in the coming weeks. YouTube Community I just created this and haven’t figured out how it works yet, but the YouTube community is now open for user posts. I’ll likely start sharing my stream schedules and other major announcements here as well. I'm going to be so real. I'm not doing okay right now. I'm scared for the future of my content, I'm frustrated with the world, and to top it all off, I'm sick. I need to take time to be offline and regulate, but the universe isn't really allowing that.

Age verification policies like those soon to be implemented by Discord will inevitably be used to target queer and leftist voices, and protecting your privacy is VITAL as any variety of marginalized person on the modern internet.

I would know.

UPDATE:
The opening of Stella's Vintage Story server has been delayed to give the team more time for setup. In response, I'm going to be switching our Wednesday and Saturday streams around.
