I am taking a class on Communication Theory.
My biggest take away from this course is to be cognizant of my time and intentional in the way I communicate. #UTcommTheory

I think that the most memorable theory is the Social Judgement theory. I liked this one because I resonate with it. I know it's just a theory, but it's a good one. People believe what they want to believe, and that's the theory. #UTcommTheory

I think Agenda-Setting Theory is still relevant. I notice it in my own feed all the time. I searched up videos of my frat strolling on TikTok months ago, and I see my frat all over my "for you" page. I also see veteran videos and ALOT of videos about carnival cruises (I go often.) #UTcommTheory

A recent example of the media shaping the public agenda is that TikTok trend with the sound “I left my home to join the army.” Those videos pop up on everybody’s feed and get people thinking about military life and why people join. Almost like a recruitment tactic for people who relate #UTcommTheory

I don’t have a parasocial relationship with any media personality. I don’t get attached to celebrities/ influencers the way others do. I don’t look to them for guidance or comfort. I think a lot of people fail to realize these people are just acting, especially on social media. #UTcommTheory

I chose Disney. They control half of what we watch, from Marvel to ESPN. They've created hundreds of movies that define what people think a “hero,” a “villain,” or even a “family” looks like, and those messages spread worldwide. My gif is from a Disney movie lol how ironic. #UTcommTheory

My meme shows me recording a serious video discussion saying “In conclusion, Media Ecology shapes how we communicate…” while my friends comment, “Why are you talking like that?” It represents context collapse because my academic and social lives overlap online, especially this class. #UTcommTheory

AI has positively impacted my educational experience by making it easier to find and organize information. I can create budgets, manage my calendar, and access what seems to be endless information in seconds when I used to have to look stuff up in books, create my own budget, etc. #UTcommTheory

During my time in the Air Force, there was a guy in my flight from Amish country Pennsylvania, who had never seen Black people. Initially, he was VERY quiet around us, just watching and trying to adapt (He did eventually). This is an example of nonassertive assimilation. #UTcommTheory

I respond best to the participative approach because I think it's better when everyone has a say in what's happening. It brings more ideas, and I am more motivated that way. #UTcommTheory

The White House could use a culture shift. There's way too much division, and not enough honesty or teamwork. I would recommend creating a culture that is more focused on unity, open and honest communication, and honestly, a younger person in office who can relate to today's world. #UTcommTheory

I don't support the claims of the Media Multiplexity Theory. When I meet people, they normally find me randomly on different social media platforms. I could've only met someone once, and they add me on 3 different platforms, and we never talk. They just be on there. #UTcommTheory

I have friends on Facebook that've added me on twitter, and I seen some stuff that I shouldn't have seen, and I feel like I am definitely a reluctant confidant. I know dang well they wouldn't be posting that stuff on Facebook. #UTcommTheory

In Hannah Montana, Miley wanted to be honest with everyone about being Hannah Montana, but she also wanted a normal life. She told Lily.
Relational Dialectics Theory says relationships work by balancing these opposites, not choosing one. #UTcommTheory

When I first started working at Walmart, I didn’t know anyone, but they all knew each other. I felt awkward and a little out of place, but as we talked more, I got more comfortable. Now we can just talk.
Uncertainty Reduction Theory: the more we communicate, the less unsure we feel. 🤷‍♂️ #UTcommTheory

Man, I went on a date with this girl I had just met a few days earlier, and she started talking about her exes and all kinds of stuff I didn't need to know. It was definitely off putting. She was basically trauma dumping. Maybe it would've been different had I known her longer. #UTcommTheory

I grew up in a protective family. My mom was a "tough love" type of mom, and she meant business. There was no going back and forth on anything regardless of how I felt about it. She said what she said, and she meant it. If I didn't listen, there were consequences. #UTcommTheory

Violation: I stood extremely close to my roommate in the kitchen.
Response: He laughed and asked why I what I was doing as he backed up.
What it tells me about our relationship: We are close enough to where if I break a boundary, it's easily corrected with respect and humor. #UTcommTheory

Today I didn't want to do my homework. I wanted to go fishing with my dad. I always try to do what I'm supposed to do, and my professors know that. They expect me to turn my best work in. I obviously didn't go fishing today, but I am getting my work done. #UTcommTheory

I find the Cybernetic Tradition more appealing because it shows how communication links all of the parts of a system together and how it functions. It really shows how connected and influential communication actually is. #UTcommTheory

I’m more drawn to the interpretive approach to theorizing because it focuses on how people actually experience communication. It values meaning, perspective, and context over just measuring behavior, which feels more realistic and relatable. I also think that context means a lot. #UTcommTheory

I like the Social Judgment Theory because it’s realistic fr. We tend to filter messages through our own beliefs. Some ideas persuade us, others get rejected. It fits Burgoon’s definition: systematic, research-backed, and predicts behavior. 🤷‍♂️ #UTcommTheory
