RIP Joe Caroff, much overlooked graphic designer who gave us some fantastic movie posters. He also designed the iconic 007 gun logo. #film #graphicdesign

I've written a thing about the loss of comedy films in cinemas, and why its time to bring them back.

It’s time for comedy to reclaim its cinematic throne
Against all the odds, and to the surprise of many – me included – the new Naked Gun reboot starring Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson is a hit. Positive critical response and word of mout…

Once upon a time, before podcasts were ubiquitous, I produced a series called Utter Shambles for @robinince.bsky.social and @josielong.bsky.social

We had brilliant guests, but a lot of episodes are lost. Around 25 still exist out there, they were really fun to do and I recommend you seek them out.

Thoroughly enjoyed chatting about this underrated gem starring Jeff Goldblum, Emma Thompson and Rowan Atkinson. Written by Richard Curtis before he descended into sentimental guff, Mel Smith’s directorial debut is far from perfect but utterly charming.

A film of firsts: Richard Curtis' first film screenplay, Emma Thompson's first film role and Mel's Smith cinematic directorial debut. And Jeff Goldblum as The Elephant Man!

First Ozzy, now the Hulkster…soon there will be no one left to make amusing cameos in cult comedies.

Right now the world seems more fragmented and polarised than ever in my lifetime. But I think we can all agree there is no better music genre for a balmy May evening in the garden than yacht rock.

Wrote this while in a bad mood yesterday. I’ve calmed down today, but I stand by it.

Saturday June 7th I'm at this, talking about stuff from my book, "Death and the Victorians". Very much looking forward. If you're in that neck of the woods, come say hello.

Catching up on #ComfortBlanket. This episode is gorgeous. I’d not seen Fallen Idol before so it prompted me to seek out this slice of postwar British Noir. It’s classy, smart, thoughtful, warm and fascinating. So just like this ep then. Bravo @robinince.bsky.social and @gralefrit.bsky.social

So far the Trump administration has been the plot of The Phantom Menace and now Trading Places. Somewhere there’s a CIA operative in a gorilla suit trapped in a crate.

I’m 47. And I’ll never be not furious when the tv I enjoy get bumped for sport. My family were all getting ready to enjoy Gladiators this morning, only to discover it wasn’t on last night cos of the fucking football. Fuck you, football. I wanted to watch Gladiators. I’m 47.

Here’s a bit of fun trivia. One actor has been in both a Christopher Reeve Superman film and the Robert Pattinson Batman film. Any guesses without jumping online?

Aside from everything else, Trump’s legacy will also be normalising the word cunt. The most offensive word in the English language is now being used by just about everyone. I hear it every single day. Because it’s the only word that best describes what Trump is.

Finally got round to this and it was totally worth it. Hurtles out the gate with a REALLY eldritch opening episode. A must listen for fans of the uncanny, with a twist of suburban dread.

Not enough to go on to tell if it's any good. Not a fan of that bloody dog. There's no need for a super dog. But it looks suitably comic booky, which we all need from Supes right now. Cautiously optimistic.

There are three types of Christmas films. Those explicitly about Christmas, those that happen to take place at Christmas, and those that remind you of Christmas.

Just watched a 37 minute YouTube video of a man called Roman building a dugout log cabin by hand. Reassuring to know that when AI inevitably comes for my job, this is yet another alternative career path I won’t be able to follow.

Hey. Hey! Thinking of a lovely stocking filler for a loved one or nemesis this Christmas? I have two books with that would be excellent choices. One even explicitly mentions Christmas, so really there’s no excuse. Get them here: linktr.ee/adrianmackin...
