(4/4) I must say I was quite frustrated by this situation.

And I still feel the system is not fair. There are surely many researchers experiencing the same situation today.

Finally, I was invited to become an AE for JMLR in 2020 and for TMLR in 2022. And for the latter, I am grateful to you!

(3/4) I reviewed up to 35 journal papers a year.

Yet, none of these editors bothered asking me to join the editorial board or the journals.

Rather, many of them invited their own PhD students, younger than me, less experienced, to join the board as Associate Editors.

We didn't submit to CVPR this year, but as an AC I am happy that the rebuttal is a 1 page pdf. Let the burden be on the authors to compress and find what is important, and not on the reviewers+AC to read tons of material.

(My opinion always was the same when being an author)

As an AC, I try to prevent this pre-rebuttal and remind reviewers that rebuttal space is limited. But some people are irritatingly stubborn.

Agreed, but.

The reviewer: Here is an assortment of 20 things I do not like about the paper, in random order, things big and small. Suggestions for the rebuttal: See weaknesses. Post rebuttal: The authors addressed items 1-19 but not item 20. Reject.

Funny paradox: if an LLM can do peer review, then by definition of "peer", AGI has been achieved and there's no need to pursue research in that direction. Ergo, LLMs don't need to review.
Ok, I have a strong opinion on this, perhaps you can convince me otherwise: if you need an LLM to understand a paper for reviewing, perhaps you should not be a reviewer.

And your argument is saved time, then perhaps you planned to not read all the details. Then again, you should not be a reviewer.

ICML 2026 is piloting a new policy on LLMs for reviewing. Both authors and reviewers choose whether limited or no LLM use is allowed in reviews, and are matched accordingly.

But: authors who say no LLMs must also review with no LLMs.

Chairs made a super thoughtful blog post!
Announcing the ICML 2026 policy for LLMs in reviewing! Reviewers and authors both pick either conservative or permissive LLM use, and will be matched accordingly. Importantly: authors on papers who choose conservative must obey the conservative policy as reviewers.
