Once you get your first big award (R01, CAREER, standard NSF, BL2 DoD), your most important task is to publish papers that cite that grant for support.

In the midst of (*waves hands*), our lab received our first NOA from NIMH, as well as our first major private foundation funding. Of course, given everything, hiring at UVA currently is...challenging, to quote our admins, but the first position for our lab is up!
