Intrastate armed conflicts have increasingly internationalized. In TraCe Working Paper No. 7, Frederik Schissler, @felixbethke.bsky.social, @hannapfeifer.bsky.social, Constantin Ruhe, @reginesonja.bsky.social & Jonas Wolff systematically assess this trend.

Amazing how many international relations "realists" who've spent decades arguing that material power not ideas matter in international affairs, are suddenly recognizing that destroying trust (an idea) and perceptions of the US (more ideas) may be materially damaging to the US.

We’re well beyond the point in the President’s Davos speech where any sensible person should have walked out of the room in protest.

It's been a busy week for me at the Globe and Mail, including this podcast explaining international law: what it is, why it matters, and how even superpowers pay a price for violations.

While the Danes and Greenlanders are in a tough spot, how either could agree to a “working group” with an entity whose sole stated purpose is to conquer their sovereign territory is beyond me. The #EU states still cannot wrap their heads around the fact that this admin has no interest in diplomacy.

Crux of the matter: “Denmark has said the U.S. — which already has a military presence — can boost its bases on Greenland. For that reason, ‘security is just a cover,’ … Trump actually wants to own the island to make money from its untapped natural resources.” apnews.com/article/gree...
Trump says anything less than having Greenland in the United States’ hands is ‘unacceptable’
President Donald Trump says that NATO should help the U.S. acquire Greenland and anything less than American control is unacceptable.

If Ottawa’s silence continues, who will stand up for us if Washington puts our own country in its crosshairs?

What will it take for Canada to call out America’s violations of international law?

My latest, in the Toronto Star: www.thestar.com/opinion/cont...
Canada must stand up to Donald Trump — or there will be no one to stand up for Canada
Does Canada have a red line for Donald Trump's behaviour? If so, what does Trump have to do for the Canadian government to find its spine, let alone its elbows?

In addition to illegality of strikes, a clear-cut war crime, if true: “The laws of armed conflict prohibit combatants from feigning civilian status to fool adversaries into dropping their guard, then attacking and killing them. That is a war crime called ‘perfidy.’” www.nytimes.com/2026/01/12/u...

My latest, as a "gift article":
We have to speak truth to power and condemn Trump’s Venezuela attack
Canada must denounce the U.S.’s military strikes and capture of Nicolas Maduro

Completely agree. 👇
Careful silence when the US started killing people in international waters. Careful silence when a Canadian ICC justice was sanctioned by the US. Now we mumble vague things about international law and Venezuela. We’re losing more than just our voice.

I’m with @zacharykaufman.bsky.social that the #Nobel Peace Prize should only be awarded posthumously. Re-upping his article from 2017: foreignpolicy.com/2017/10/05/g...
Give the Nobel Peace Prize Posthumously
There’s an easy way to avoid betrayal by winners of the world’s most important humanitarian prize: only give it to dead people.

Agreed. 👇
This isn’t enough.

To support international law and democracy, we must be able to denounce its imposition on #Venezuela’s citizens by the illegal use of force.

We must oppose those who insult the rule of law & condemn those who violate the UN Charter & international laws.
Please see my statement on the situation in Venezuela:

It is critically important for the international community today, including Canada, to strongly condemn the US’ unlawful use of armed force in #Venezuela. Silence = acquiescence, which has legal consequences.
January 3, 2026 at 8:59 PM
Nuremberg prosecutor Ben Ferencz put it best: the illegal use of armed force in IL is when it's not in self-defence and was not approved by the #UNSC. The US' attack on #Venezuela this morning, like the unlawful boat strikes that preceded it, violates these principles of IL.
