Aurora borealis illuminating the night sky in candy colors with some stars twinkling in between. One of the best events in my life was watching the natural phenomenon Aurora Borrealis in May 2024 that left me both mesmerized and mystified.
I went out on a field to look for the dazzling dancing lights and eventually I was lying on said field in the dirt, looking up and watching the breathtakingly beautiful spectacle above me with tears in my eyes.
The aurora was fluidly dancing over me in all shades of purple, pink, green, dark red, in round shapes and in pillars under some sparkling stars.
Rare pink auroras are typically associated with a high solar activity. Red auroras occur only during strong electromagnetic storms.

Auroras are caused by energized particles from the sun that are slamming into Earth's upper atmosphere at speeds of up to 45 million mph / 72 million kmh. The magnetic field of the Earth then redirects the particles towards the north and south poles.
The different colors are caused by the level of the solar activity, strength of the storm, density in the atmosphere, and the gases in the atmosphere that are excited by the incoming particles, eg oxygen and nitrogen, emit different colors. Also the altitude at which the aurora occurs plays a role, eg. oxygen emits green light, which is the most common color of the aurora, but it can also emit red light at higher altitudes.
Nitrogen emits blue light, and can also produce purple and pink colors when mixed with oxygen. Truly amazing and fascinating!

Ein noch dunkler, langgezogener Berg (Rigi) in der Bildmitte. Viele graue Wolken am Himmel, der Vordergrund liegt noch im Dunkeln.
Die Morgensonne, versteckt hinter den Wolken, schickt ihre Strahlen, wie zwei Scheinwerfer nach links und rechts und beleuchtet so Teile der Wolkendecke bis fast zu uns.
