The virgin Mary is such a hard concept this days, I think it might be harder to understand the idea today than 100 years before. Living a life where sex/pleasure is not central is unthinkable to the modern human.
Like is "you might get to live on another planet when you die" really that much weirder than "a girl was born without sin and then gave birth to a baby who was the Son of God but never ever ever had sex, ever"
