Highlighting a criminal’s homeland might drive engagement, but it solves nothing. If we care about safety, we'd address real issues—poverty, corruption, lack of education, the unchecked power of the wealthy, extremism, and hate speech. But those don’t make for easy fear-bait headlines, do they?
Some media love to highlight the nationality of foreign criminals—because, of course, that’s the real issue, not the crime itself. Then, when far-right parties rise on that same fearmongering and start controlling the media and free speech, suddenly it’s a tragedy. Who could have seen that coming?
