Writer, addicted reader and climate activist, I live in San Francisco. Bluesky has helped me come to a reckoning with Trump and the 77 million Americans who voted for him. Books are my refuge, writing is my release. https://daverhodywriting.wordpress.com
This Kristi Noem PR photo reminds me of everything that's wrong with South Dakota - the state I was born in.
Like their former governor, they're proud of cowboy culture and Mount Rushmore -- which was built on stolen Lakota land.

This reminds me of what Winston Churchill said about how messy democratic rule is:
“Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others.”

I get Burn's point, that the U.S. was a beacon of democracy for the rest of the world in the late 18th & early 19th Century, but it's not true that 'everybody up to that point had been under authoritarian rule.'
Besides ancient Greeks, many Native American tribes practiced forms of democratic rule.
Burns: The Old Testament says there’s nothing new under the sun. On July 4th, 1776, there was. Everybody up to that point had been under authoritarian rule. It was in the interests of their rulers that they be uneducated, that they be superstitious, that they be distracted by conspiracies…

Democratic Socialism is definitely not communism. But there has long been a raging debate among socialists regarding what it actually is, hence the errors and ambiguities reflected in this and other MSM "explainers." 1/
Some compare Democratic socialism to communism. Here's how the movements differ
While critics have deemed Zohran Mamdani's Democratic socialist beliefs as "communist," historians contend the group has actually built off democratic principles.

WTF?
@govpritzker.illinois.gov WTH is going on? Dragging faith leaders? Please explain why Illinois police are doing this.
at one point, i watched a cook county sheriff’s officer (who appears to be in charge) point out a priest in the crowd.

he and a couple officers then went into the crowd , dragged him into the street, and arrested him.

situation is still tense as crowd jostles with police to get into the street.

They can't go after Trump - yet - but when Georgia prosecutors take over where Fani Willis left off, they can nail people like Rudy Giuliani and Mark Meadows, and lay the groundwork to prosecute Trump later.

Hopefully this sets a judicial precedence - forcing cops across the country to non-violent with peaceful protestors.
In a court victory from the 2021 resistance to Line 3 pipeline construction in MN, a federal appeals court ruled that police officers who use excessive force on protesters are not entitled to qualified immunity and cannot use excessive force to prompt compliance.

Weather is short-term; climate is long-term. A cold week doesn’t disprove a warming planet. Scientists use decades of data—temperatures, ice loss, ocean heat—to determine climate trends.
