Archaeologist Greer Jarrett's evidence of a decentralised network of ports, located on islands and peninsulas, which probably played a central role in trade and travel in the Viking era, and likely reflects the maritime worldview held by these intrepid voyagers.

In the Pacific this legacy of war goes back to at least the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-05 and continued to the end of the Cold War. They are indisputably a growing threat to marine lives and the sustainability of coastal communities across the Pacific Ocean.
