Maybe life doesn’t get any better than this, or any worse, and what we get is just what we’re willing to find: small wonders where they grow

I was amazed watching wonderful ads like this one on Sinclair User from March 1985, where US Gold boasted about its early catalog. And rightly so, so many attractive titles. I always wanted to try Fort Apocalypse and Up'n'Down, which I don't think were ever released for the Spectrum...

I didn't remember this ad for the Blade Runner videogame for Spectrum. Released by CRL after that masterful move to acquire the rights to Vangelis's (extraordinary) soundtrack, the idea of "interpreting" the film through its music could have been very successful. Could.

Just out: my article on the beginnings of computing & gaming in Argentina, from the first computer (1961) to the end of the 80s. What was the first Argentinian game? Why isn't there any famous Argentinian company until the 90s (and even then very few of them). Read here: zeitgame.net/archives/18373

Little did we know in October 1983, flipping through PCW, that email would eventually become indispensable, completely replacing traditional postal mail. Hotmail and Gmail didn't exist yet, but it was clear that it had many advantages and hardly any disadvantages...

Sinclair ZX Spectrum turns 43 today, April 23rd. And the surprising thing is that after going on sale at £175/125 for the 48/16K editions in April'83, three months later the July issue of PCW announced that they had dropped to just £100/130. A real bargain that boosted Spectrum sales!!

In the early 1980s there were few restrictions regarding copyright and licensing in Europe. Many clones of Donkey Kong, Space Invaders or Pac-Man appeared for home microcomputers. But by late 1982 Atari started to publish these ads warning about it and several companies received threatening letters!

June 1982. PCW exclusively introduces the Sinclair ZX Spectrum 16/48K to the world. July and we find the first full page ad of a Spectrum game, Bug-Byte's Spectral Invaders. In machine code, its author was D.H. Lawson and he'd later work on many Imagine hits as Arcadia. First Spectrum game then?

You got more than 250 pages for 75 pence in any mid-1982 issues of Personal Computer World (PCW), packed with hardware advertisements for multiple brands and equipment aimed at large and small businesses, and even casual users and students (programmable calculators). It was absolute chaos, a jungle!

Personal Computer World (PCW) began publication in the UK in 1978. But it wasn't until its February 1981 issue that we found the first videogames ad. Not chess, draughts or backgammon as usual, but arcade programmes inspired by coin-ops. And it was none other than Bug-Byte with a little-known logo!

It's impressive to look through the first European microcomputer magazines and find advertisements for kits to assemble one's own small and modest computer. And from no less a brand than Science of Cambridge (later Sinclair Research) or Acorn, which would continue their rivalry throughout the 1980s.
