I would add that primaries are important for enforcing party discipline on candidates.
Candidates like Joe Manchin may well win general elections but it's demoralizing to loyal Democratic voters to see them then go off "palling around" and voting with MAGA Republicans.

I watched Marco Rubio and Tom Cotton on TV this morning. Based on what they said, which only really emphasized the importance of removing Maduro, I suspect that there is actually no plan beyond that. Whatever happens Trump will say that we got Maduro so the problem is solved.
