In fact I'm 2024 every manifesto was literally unsustainable
The fact that in both 2019 and 2024, the winning party did so with a set of manifesto promises that could not be kept and dissolved upon contact with actual office is something that as an industry we should be much more bothered by than we are.

If I asked you which country has the most progressive tax system in the developed world — where high earners hand over an especially large share of their income relative to the average worker — what would your answer be?

The answer is in fact Britain. on.ft.com/4a5jIFc

It’s another conspiracy of silence. Conservatives don’t want to admit they massively increased taxes on high earners. Labour definitely don’t want to say so; they still want to peddle the idea that others, the rich, can pay more. Truth is if we want more spending we’ll all have to pay more.

This (from: www.ft.com/content/75ce...) is something you can *feel* if you are in the UK, especially if you've experienced living abroad. But infuriatingly successive governments and our entire media are somehow absolutely committed to suggesting anyone who wants to change this is the devil...

The two things Reeves should do in her budget are a) get a big enough buffer that government policy stops being subject to even minor fluctuations in the forecast b) do that without doing silly revenue raisers that do harmful things like discourage pension saving:
Rachel Reeves’ Budget must be built to last and avoid harmful minor changes
Labour MPs and voters have no appetite for significant spending cuts
