The Three Sisters Community Garden
@3sistersgarden.bsky.social
A small community garden built on waste ground in inner city Belfast. We've been growing vegetables and herbs to share with local residents and providing a space to build connection and friendships.
It's in the shelter of each other we live 🌱
Pinned
We haven't had a fundraiser for a few years as there's many causes in need of support, but we're hoping to achieve what we need in the Autumn. Any help is appreciated, muckers 🙏💗

Our garden is named after this growing method for a reason. Three different crops, sharing space and supporting eachothers growth, works.
Gardeners are the "fourth sister." Sowing seeds and doing a wee bit of minding. Take time to read the chapter 🌱😉

We're doing all we can to push for urban growing projects to be regarded as essential infrastructure.
There are no losers in this and we have everything to gain.

It's still August but my house smells like Samhain/Hallowe'en.
Loads of sweet, juicy organic apples from The Plough Mens Shed in Grosvenor Road Community Garden, given out and we left with a big bag.
Peeled, added cinnamon (you can see a piece sticking out), cloves, vanilla extract, brown sugar and

As food prices continue to climb, make sure you are working to strengthen your local food system and community gardens. It will take community level efforts to combat this.

Groups like ours come in all shapes and sizes, but our goal is the same. There are no losers in creating green spaces and developing a growing infrastructure in our streets. We just need our politicians to step up.

The need for now essential growing space is widespread, especially in urban communities.
"So much of Ireland’s food supply is imported, leaving the country vulnerable to food insecurity. The community growing movement came about because people started to get really worried about this.”
There are hundreds of people in queues for allotments across Dublin city, council figures show. The current city development plan sets an aim of doubling allotments, but that is caveated with “if feasibly possible”. www.dublininquirer.c...

Carrots are still being harvested from a 1 meter x .5 meter bed. Organic, full of flavour and grown from seed. Found some of our tomato plants have started to fruit! They're called Costoluto Fiorentino and are a rich, meaty tomato, which makes great pasta sauce! Maybe we'll have 1/2

A good harvest today, visitors calling in, beds tidied, tomatoes pruned, carrots thinned, and the last of the potatoes bagged up. If this weather stretches into the weekend, we might have to light the bbq on Saturday 😎😉 Fruit trees are loaded and our first try at growing sweetcorn? So far, so good!

We're 25% there, so thank you! We're hoping 500 people can find it possible to throw us £2 which will get us closer to our target.
Building the greenhouse means we can help others get set up food growing spaces.
Thank you 🤝

Trying to build a community growing infrastructure across our streets isn't just about addressing physical and mental wellbeing.
We're addressing the very real warnings on the upcoming food shortages.
It's not "if".
Its "when".
Please apply pressure to your 1/2

Last week at the Brink Festival, Belfast, there was a panel discussion on Activism and Environmentalism.
A woman asked Bernadette McAliskey how to get community more involved when coping with so much.
Bernadette's reply will never leave me.
"You dig where you stand."
There's the answer 🌱😉

These are called Costoluto Fiorentino, and we've grown them from seeds, bought from organic seed suppliers "Brown Envelope Seeds" near Cork. Every seed planted germinated, as did their corn and salad seeds. We'll be buying from them again.

Sweetcorn seedlings planted into their bed today. Let's see how they do 🙏 More peas in, lots of thirsty potatoes and potted fruit trees watered with more herbs planted.
A glass of wine and putting the world to rights under our new lights ✨️ 🥂💫 💓

What's "funny" is many people think gardeners, people who care about the environment and our community, are happy clappy, kumbafuckinya singing hippys.
We build, grow food and help organise, to destroy the fucking system,
An army marches on its stomach.
We've organic carrots and wine.

We're doing this in our community garden on the 18th of May. People talk about "grassroots." We're working on the soil. That's where everything grows 🌱

Today, we're receiving a large batch of these exotic flowers.
They're poisonous and have the ability to move around so we're asking local residents to keep their doors closed until we get the cage built.
Please secure small dogs as they've a taste for them.
Thank you for your help 🙏
