When I suddenly remembered Akechi can speak fluent English.
Quick #sketches for ep.28 of #成化十四年. #汪植 & 崔媽媽's relationship is...🤔 but their sighing contest was funny. Her counterpart on team 唐泛 is 東姑, the noodle-shop lady. Once you recognize the foil set-up you can't unsee. Such a shame that the show was too undisciplined to pull off coherence.

I was rewatching #成化十四年 ep.26 when I got inspired to draw quick sketches of fav scenes rather than more involved sketches. I REALLY enjoyed eps.26-29, the mini-arc about imposter!錦衣衛, culminating in the hostage situation at 歡意樓. The way this show later crushed my burgeoning expectations.😭

I've been lowkey following the artists of the LJ pantspress sketchblog since...well, those days. Their early webcomics...❤️ Incredible to see everyone carry on creating such wonderful stories. I also have Anita's Ghost & read her summer camp one, hope I'll be able to get this from the library.
More #成化十四年 fanart, this time a scene from ep.14, when 余將軍 trashed 歡意樓 in a drunken rage to pick a fight w/ #汪植 & the latter appeared at the top of the staircase to calm things down. I liked how his expression & hair turned out. Also, watercolor is fun but I am AWFUL at it, as you see.😭

Example of how annoying I can get when finding myself interested in something: I stopped for a week when I hit ch.41 of #成化十四年 b/c the narration mentioned that 梁芳 was 御馬監掌印太監 & 汪直 was only 秉筆太監, & went on a frantic hunt to verify b/c it didn't sound right.😅

Following up briefly. The issue w/ the novel is...well, I just don't think it's THAT much better. After all the hullabaloo from fans hating on the show, I was expecting A LOT more, & I'm one of those "purist" types who almost always likes the original better. 成化 must now be one of the exceptions.
There's more but I haven't taken photos yet. I've also read more of the novel after a hiatus when I got distracted checking some historical trivia, & am now on ch.129. I must say, I certainly wasn't expecting the novel to give me newfound appreciation for the show. An intensely exasperating read.

Don't have time to go into detail (maybe later), but this part in «成化十四年» ch4 was interesting. The novel was praised for its attention to history; the show also clearly did its research for #汪植. So a major reason I wanted to read the novels was to compare treatments of the character.

Looking back at my previous #成化十四年 posts & realizing that I mentioned "汪植 is based on a real historical figure" Every. Single. Time. Clearly this is very important to me.🫠 (B/c the historical eunuch was ALSO cool! Very much maligned; he wasn't nearly as awful as his enemies made him out to be.)

It's so lonely being hyperfixated on something that no one else cares about (成化 fandom deader than our ancestors).😭 Normally I have a friend I can ramble at, but this time she's aggressively uninterested so... I guess that's what this is for (shouting into the void) but I've been weirdly reluctant.

I hate to be the person who posts w/ no context but I'm rewatching #成化十四年 & this part in episode 9... wut? Why didn't #唐泛 et al. stand up during the toast to #汪植? 😅 That's so rude 😭 唐泛 is an official, he should know better than to sit there like a bumpkin. I can't w/ how he's written in this show.

UBER distracted by 成化十四年, a mystery drama set in the Ming Dynasty.
Objectively it is not very good. Beyond the mid mysteries, the two male leads are awful (acting + character). The entire thing is propped up by male lead #3, the eunuch 汪植 (based on an actual historical figure, pictured).

UBER distracted by 成化十四年, a mystery drama set in the Ming Dynasty.

Forgot to mention I read these in simplified Chinese, so I can't say if the original Japanese would give me the same vibes (Ranpo in Japanese is probably beyond my ability).

Read『赤い部屋』 ("The Red Room") & 『疑惑』("Doubt") by #江戸川乱歩 yesterday. Every time I finish a Ranpo story, my first response is always, "Well that was weird." Other than being #mystery or crime fiction, his stuff defies categorization; they're entirely in his own strange world.

Akechi looking up. I was thinking of the final scene in "Unlucky Men in the Rain/殺人ポーカー" when I drew it. I love this pose but it's really hard to get right, & I'm not thrilled w/ his expression (aimed for pensive, got blah instead).

Everything else, like Miyuki's clothes (WTF), poor Kenmochi's body (was practicing that angle), Kindaichi's proportions, Akechi's wall art (he's supposed to be quite discerning but I failed him)...yeah.😔 I apologize to these characters (kinda like Akechi's smile though).
