For
Your listening pleasure. I recently had a chat with my ever insightful colleague @adamjamesquinn.bsky.social for the Political Worldview podcast to talk about all things #Czech and #Slovak. We also ended up talking quite a lot about the US.
Czech out (ahem) the latest episode of the podcast! This time I’m chatting with our go-to knower of small Central European countries, @timhaughton.bsky.social, about how the Czechs and Slovaks have been doing since the Velvet Revolution. 🇨🇿 🇸🇰 Audio links under the original post. 👇
New episode out now! "Czeching Back In". The anniversary of the Velvet Revolution approaching, @adamjamesquinn.bsky.social chats with @timhaughton.bsky.social about how Czechia and Slovakia have fared in the years since, and parallels with the populist playbook elsewhere. 🎙️

Congratulations to my awesome PhD student Rachel Herring (whom I supervise with the great Ed Turner) on her first academic article: a fascinating study of #German-Polish relations www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....
‘Poland is Back’: German Narrative Adjustment in the German-Polish Special Relationship, 2007–2024
Poland is one of Germany’s most significant international partners and is characterised in German discourses as a neighbour, friend and ally. Nevertheless, recent changes in government in Poland ha...

благодаря/ďakujem/Thank you for the kind shout out to our work.

The current Labour government needs to convey a message of hope, hope, hope. Voters are frustrated and disappointed. For all its faults the Blair government (at least in the first few years) conveyed a sense of hope and a belief that things really could get better and were moving in that direction.

Over 95% votes now counted. Babis’s ANO wins over a third of the vote. Some form of coalition with ANO at the helm likely.

Sean, just sent you a WhatsApp message.

80% now counted in Czech elections.

Lots of interesting stories beyond the immediate headlines: Pirates crossing the threshold again; Communist led Stacilo currently below the threshold; and Babis’s most likely coalition partner, the Motorists crossing the threshold.

Spolu likely to increase share of its vote as the bigger settlements still to declare. Babis’s ANO will clearly be the largest party, but may struggle to form a coalition with a majority in parliament.

2/3 votes counted in Czech elections. 🧵🧵

Wish I could have been there.

Thanks Tim. This looks very helpful indeed. Have a great weekend and hope our paths cross again soon.

What is the best article length account explaining the outcome of the 2024 UK general election that draws on theories of voting behaviour? Would like a suggestion to assign to my students. Thanks. Self-nominations welcome! @timbale.bsky.social @drjennings.bsky.social @robfordmancs.bsky.social

Have fun and enjoy the city.

Name changes and parties. The number of times former Slovak PM Igor Matovic has changed the name of his party is striking ….

Know a potential PhD student interested in #democraticresilience, environmental politics & the Baltics? If so pls encourage them to check out this funded studentship & chance to work with my wonderful colleagues Licia Cianetti and Fiona Nunan. For more info: www.birmingham.ac.uk/research/cen...

Congratulations 🙌
There is so much to agree with @catherinedevries.bsky.social including, “Academia trains us to write for a test … But the real work is writing to be understood. A strong voice isn’t about dazzling the gatekeepers. It’s about building a path, connecting the dots, and making our argument matter.”
Voice is one of the most talked-about, and least explained, aspects of academic writing.

We’re told to “find it,” but rarely taught how to build it.

I wrote up some reflections here:

A 🧵 about why so much academic writing feels voiceless & what to do about it.

Talk of #NewParties in many countries at the moment. From Zarah Sultana to Elon Musk (and many points in between), I would humbly suggest those considering creating new parties and those seeking to understand the challenges should consider reading #TheNewPartyChallenge global.oup.com/academic/pro...

Tomorrow marks the 9th anniversary of Britain’s EU referendum. Students and international friends often ask me how and why did #Brexit happen? I tried to address that in a review article published a few years ago. Part of it comes down to 3 slogans and 9 words: www.cambridge.org/core/journal...
