Dr. Steve Carver: Toward Meeting Europe's Commitment to 30x30 Targets: a Spatial Modelling Approach
🖥️ Online Talk with Dr. Steve Carver, Geographer and Professor at the University of Leeds on 3 December 2025, organised by the Swiss Wilderness Forum 🏔️🇨🇭 Dr. Steve Carver draws on his decades of experience in wilderness protection and modelling to highlight targets 1-3 of the UN GBF Kunming-Montreal Agreement, exploring what they mean and their implications for wilderness protection and rewilding across continental Europe He points out that the highest quality wilderness can be found primarily in northern latitudes and at high altitudes. In order to meet the Kunming-Montreal target of 30% protected area, he suggests identifying the wildest 30% of land area in each European biogeographical region in order to achieve a more balanced picture of biodiversity. *** MORE INFORMATION 👉 https://environment.leeds.ac.uk/geography/staff/1013/prof-steve-carver 👉 https://www.forum-wildnis.ch

From fairytales to modern horror films, wolves are too often cast as monsters and that misinformation shapes public opinion more than science does. In the UK and Ireland, where wolves have been absent for centuries, this fear is one of the biggest barriers to wolf recovery. 🔗 https://bit.ly/48mtSA3
This classic fairytale could be damaging Europe’s wolf rewilding efforts
While wolves once roamed Europe for centuries, for most people, they exist only in stories or on screen

Some thoughts on the new government's Environmental Improvement Plan, which deserved more attention, is broadly impressive, and yet faces significant challenges, some of which are of the government's own making. www.businessgreen.com/blog-post/45...

8% is CRoW land. Don't forget the 140,000 miles of PRoW.

Got an infographic for that?

250,000ha = 1%. Falls a bit short of the 30% targets we signed up to in the Kunming-Montreal Agreement.

Erudite as ever.

Imagine reading a book on all the mistruths told about the British countryside only to find it misses out the biggest lie of all 😉

We took the Government to court over the last one. This time, warm words won’t cut it – nature needs delivery.

New report on gamebird releases in Cairngorms National Park doesn't tell even half the story.

Study included less than half (45%) of estates rearing & releasing non-native gamebirds. MSPs need to interpret results cautiously & appropriately.

I think I've missed a week with my random wilderness photos. I've been scanning old 35mm slides and found this one of autumn colours ands mist in a forest on the side of a Japanese volcano from 1998.

Nature isn’t a “blocker” – it makes our lives better.

Our coast, countryside, heritage and wildlife underpin our food, water and health and put millions of pounds into the economy. The Government must not weaken the laws that protect them.
