In this paper we combine a meta-analysis showing that urban mosquitoes are crowded as larvae, with experimental work showing crowded larvae a more infectious as adults. An intriguing, horrible synergistic consequence of urbanisation.

Having scientists within management agencies to engage with was key. Along with resources to support scientists to do research in the parks. How we get scientists to engage with the actual park managers is harder. Any suggestions would be most welcome!

We found some collaboration between international and local scientists. But lots of "park parachute" science - not involving park managers in research. Scientists parachuting into PAs without engaging with managers is an opportunity lost for more relevant science and effective knowledge exchange.

12 ✨paid✨ PhD positions in environmental humanities - co/organised by Uni Augsburg and LMU. I’m also an affiliate there - check out the call: rethinking-environment-idk.de

There are an amazing diversity of places where biodiversity exists outside PAs that could possibly be OECMs. I took a look at what types of areas have been suggested so far: doi.org/10.1111/conl...
There is lots of work to be done answering the question - which of these areas should be OECMs?
Diverse approaches to protecting biodiversity: The different conservation measures discussed as possible other effective area‐based conservation measures
Other effective area-based conservation measures (OECMs) create opportunities for a wide range of area-based conservation strategies. As countries seek to integrate OECMs into conservation planning, ...

Thanks Dan. It would be great to chat about it. I’ve more questions than answers at the moment but the questions are interesting and the answers are complicated. Hoping to find some win-win solutions

Are you interested in conserving biodiversity outside protected areas? We’re hiring a postdoctoral research fellow to work on Other Effective area-based Conservation Measures (OECMs) for 2 years. Please share with your networks. More information here: careers.pageuppeople.com/513/cw/en/jo...

I wrote (ranted) on experimental design as I was frustrated as an editor at how little guidance students were getting. I underestimated the interest in the issue: it has been downloaded 10,000+ times! Clearly it’s something we need to be talking about more. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....
Principles of experimental design for ecology and evolution
Here I argue that we do not discuss experimental design, often until it is too late. This editorial seeks to begin a conversation about how and where to replicate appropriately.

I think that’s a shame. You have been a shining light on those pods. Your fans would like to see that acknowledged. And you’ll be missed

Alex, when will your final episodes air? I want to make sure I don’t miss your farewell!

With @rgoldenkroner.bsky.social and Chris Lemieux we show 42% of all Conserved Areas were once PAs. No explanations given for the change. We need transparency and accountability in the lead up to 30x39 to ensure changes increase protection for biodiversity and don’t undermine it.

How do we track changes to Protected and Conserved areas? We extend the PADDD framework to capture CADDD. Document the first CA downgrade and identify a shocking number of PAs converted to Conserved Areas with no explanation. doi.org/10.1016/j.on...

There's a deep sense of sadness and loneliness seeing this record shattering graph.

November 17, 2023 was the first day in recorded history when the earth's surface was a whole 2°C hotter than pre-industrial times. Yet, there's barely any chatter about this staggering breach.

If you find a good solution please share. I think we’re all in the same position. My university thinks it’s a “valuable tool” they’ll all be using in the work force. But I think they need to learn how not to use it first 🙄
