It's crazy that this & previous governments (rightly) constantly hymn 'Britain's world-class universities' and (rightly) consistently identify them as central to national strategy, and yet pursue policies which are eroding, if not destroying, an asset that other countries would give anything to have

Fair to say that Adam Smith wouldn't touch the Adam Smith Institute with a bargepole.
FFS. Adopt policies that make running unis well an impossible task, then moan that they have to pay >£300k for mediocre VCs, grumble that this is corrosive, and think they can “balance books” by cutting senior pay a bit, and raising “productivity” 🤔 No wonder ppl like me have headed for the door.
…concluding that estimates of impact on US consumer prices will be very significant for some time?
…and therefore very difficult to see how even a 50% actual tariff on (say) south East Asian garments will swing the balance in favour of relocating production to high labour cost USA (especially in the context of a very tough anti-immigration regime)
Presumably Trump’s “reciprocal” tariffs also correlate closely and inversely with international manufacturing unit labour costs at whatever the $ exchange rate was yesterday (unless you’re making semiconductors in which case even he is smart enough to spot global market power when he sees it) 🤔
It’s 9am TFT time here, and citizens are already gathering to protest Tariffs by the United States. Our plain clothes Officer Penguins are attempting to maintain calm, but unfortunately we keep losing them in the crowd.

Thanks to Ted Nevin (birth centenary this month) and his associates (some of whom taught me) we know a lot more about the historical development and current state of the Welsh economy. Despite this, and because of lousy policymakers, this history does not read well…🤔

But needs to be a lot less bonkers if people in (rural) Wales are to leave their (mainly) fossil fuel cars at home and use the (checks notes…) currently diesel powered trains. I fully accept that this is not easy.
