Posed. One, even laughing. Sure, I had wispy dark hair, and Ledas possessed a luxuriant auburn mane. Sure, her eyes were an unnatural green, while mine were a clean brown. Sure, I was pale and unfreckled... but I was pale like a toadstool grown in darkness, pale like I’d been dipped in a vat—and the rest of my face: the shape of the eyes, the mouth, the reflection who smiled grimly back— How could I have been this blind? My mind wailed and broke as a man in the crowd elbowed me, then apologized—and then stammered another apology edging away. Was it merely that I was dressed like an extra from The Hook and the Rod? Despite her protest, her look of shame indicated that she partially agreed with her husband. "You saw the maniac. If that damned church had allowed me to carry my gun, I might've taken him down there, save us a lot of trouble. I told you I wanted to bring the revolver, anyway. What did I say before we left?" Carol turned to Grace, who was leaning against the bathroom door frame. From the look of her, she probably could have fallen asleep right there. "He did say he wanted to bring the gun." Carol told her daughter, who wearily blinked in reply.
