Proudest hack I ever did was streaming all their wordprocessing text docs over a terminal emulator to be chopped up and saved by my external script to save the brothers from the 1000s the outgoing vendor wanted to charge to do it. (Box had NO serial zmodem or other file transfer utilities installed)

Computers? Why yes, I had a green-screen VAX terminal that could just about do basic wordprocessing. It was several years later that I was upgraded to an actual PC with an internet connection that could cope with more than email.

If all you're doing is wordprocessing Libra Office is workable. I have it on a couple of machines around the shop and office. If you need a functional spreadsheet program, I wouldn't touch Libre Office.

If you want formatting, you use WordPad, or Word, or GoogleDocs, or LibreOffice or any other wordprocessing option.
Notepad is the thing you use when you specifically *don’t* want formatting.
For example, stripping out the quirks from a document descended from a InfoMap template created in 97.

My parents have a *very old* (I'm going to say, Windows XP) computer, which they use for Gmail and some basic wordprocessing. Almost every programme on it is getting to the end of it's life, so I'd like to create a Linux OS that I can boot from a flash drive.

Anyway made me realize rhe skillset required for our trade shifted radically. first with the pc/wordprocessing (way easier error correction & spellcheck), then with literature access online (no weeks spend in the library), then with stackoverflow for coding/math.

Used to be lots of small wordprocessing apps, notably basic rich text editors, one by one were abandoned and MS Works was abandoned, Jarte no longer maintained, Wordperfect Office more the way you don't want than MS Office is.
Linux though has number of small wordprocessing applications available.

I switched my email to Protonmail for what it's worth. Encrypted, servers in Switzerland, affordable and includes VPN services. Mapquest for GPS. Libre for spreadsheets, wordprocessing, etc.

There are unlimited wordprocessing programs but they are all either too ugly, too pretty, or owned by a corporation who is going to inject AI whether you want it or not. Or web-only apps, which, not to be all old and shit, but I want it on my hard drives first

I like Windows ME and feel a sense of nostalgia about it. Misplaced, I'm sure. I'll bet if I'd done much more than wordprocessing back then, I'm sure I'd have spotted some issues.

There's SS Suite, they do small specialised applications including minimal wordprocessing applications, it's freeware.
