WODB, visual patterns. Everyone can start and think and share. Ceiling is so often things I haven't even thought of.

New project alert!

Which One Doesn't Belong? Second Edition.

I am deep in the middle of writing and would love input from folks who have used the routine in their classrooms.

Which One Is Unique (aka Which One Doesn’t Belong) is a powerful discussion starter… if your prompt is well constructed. Here’s an example.

I tried it with my pre-K class, and they had a lot to say.

K said the bottom right was a 4 but the others no.
G said yes, the others were 4.
K explained that he meant it looked like a number 4.

Which one doesn't belong? Allows students to justify their thinking. No wrong answers. Great conversations at @jaciemaslyk.bsky.social session #IDEACon

Oh yes, definitely! A quick way to provide access.
I recently included a stem w/a WODB for teachers (who weren’t familiar w the MLR or WODB) with whom I was working and they also noted how stems would invite all students, not just their MLL. Glad they experienced and realized that in real-time.

Which one doesn't belong? Why? #WODB

Can you come up with a reason for each?

What do you think first graders would say?
I made this for a friend who was headed off to talk with first graders about circles last week.

I got to visit my old students, now in G3, always a joyous time. We did a 'Which one doesn't belong?' #wodb first of all. After they'd shared ideas (black) I asked them to think again in terms of fractions (blue)

I understand that IF students have been doing the same routines since kindergarten, ostensibly they would ALREADY be routine, but I also know that each teacher may have a slightly different spin on how they enact a routine like notice/wonder or WODB. Plus, it's been a whole summer & new kids...

Me encanta el recurso WODB! Lo uso semanalmente en toda primaria para mejorar la argumentación, la observación y los atributos!
November 18, 2024 at 9:09 PM
Hard to choose, but I would probably say Notice and Wonder. That seems to be the one I fall back on, even with other resources like WODB, Slow Reveal, Same but Different. It seems to allow for more open responses and can get to patterns and structure as well.

The brown triangle with 4 stamped in each corner… because it only has 3 sides and 3 vertices. The others are all rectangular-ish. #WODB #MTBoS #ElemMathChat #MathPlay
